This will be a test of the polling industry. If public sentiment is truly against this ruling then the GOP will suffer long term for this. IF they’re right…interesting to see

Issue polling has always been flawed because the fact is most people don’t really care about a particular issues one way or the other . It’s just that when they are polled they basically answer a Postion that sounds better to them but it doesn’t mean they care .

The people who care are already partisan democrats and partisan republicans

Mississippi and South Dakota both had votes on banning abortion this century and overwhelmingly chose not to. There is hard evidence that this ruling is very unpopular beyond polls.

What a sad day for this country. I shudder to think about what's next. Will the Court overturn marriage equality? I assume that will be the next challenge, if it isn't already in the works.

Same sex relations, contraception, school integration,

And maybe the economic issues as well, social security, Medicare,

The whole new deal paradigm is at risk.

A politician fundraising based on the political issue of the day? How scandalous.

Anyone have a list about some messed up situations that are now going to be legal/illegal in certain states based on their current laws?

We are increasingly living under a right-wing judicial dictatorship, and we need to treat that as the crisis that it is.

Lol so returning this decision to the people’s elected representatives is dictatorship

They get to experience what conservatives felt in the 1960s and 1970s when the then-awful Supreme Court just made stuff up.

Beyond Roe, what cases are you referring to?

Biden should have packed the court after McConnell and Trump's shenanigans. What is the point of winning elections and doing nothing when your opponents win elections and do whatever they feel like it. About 50 years of women's progress has been erased with one dubious court decision. The progressives will have to waste energy continuing to fight this issue when we have other key issues to fight. A cynical person might even say this is by design.

I won't say by design in the sense that there's some conspiratorial cabal among establishment politicians, but there doesn't need to be. Some courses of action and their impacts are pretty obvious. If pro-establishment, pro-status-quo politicians all act in favor of the existing state of affairs, it will continue even if they never have a single quiet conversation  with each other.

And that's what's been happening for the last half-century. Congress has passed legislation only to keep the status quo rolling - negative feedback legislation, effectively. "Progress" such as it is, has come almost entirely from the courts.

Now, the GOP has gained enough control of the courts to disrupt the status quo - not in good ways, not even in honestly reactionary ways. Democrats are united in opposing right-wing disruption of the status-quo, but split between those who want to keep the status-quo going, and those who want left-wing disruption of the status-quo ante.

It's time for Democrats to play hardball; we can't keep being the nice guys while the GOP goes full Gilead.

We need to start funding programs to mail any woman who needs it contraceptive pills in red and blue states, free of charge.

Blue states need to pass amnesty laws that any woman who is prosecuted for exercising her reproductive rights will be protected in blue states.

Democratic Presidents must forthrightly lay out the case to the American people for the deterioration of the judicial branch since the Garland fiasco and go full Jackson. Weekly addresses if necessary.

Except this is likely just the first step in trying to create a right-wing theocracy.

I don't see a problem with this decision I really don't, but it's gonna have an effect on females mostly than men, because Abortion is killing a human being and babies are burdens but adults are helpful once they become adults babies help the parent

The country chose Guns over Abortion in 2016 with Hillary v Trump anyways

How do you go Jackson on a decision that says the people’s elected representatives are the ones who will decide abortion law

On the issue of financing the right to travel for an abortion, one would hope that charities would step up to the plate, and at least for the moment, Congress through reconciliation could pass a law financing travel for an abortion on a means tested basis. Some states will allow abortion in the first trimester perhaps.

What's stopping states from criminalizing abortion funding? And lol if you think bold is going to happen.

Right to travel per Kavanaugh (if the funding is to finance the travel). I am predicting nothing.

This is the mistake Atlas always makes in analyzing politics; people here think that because an issue exists and people say they have an opinion on it, they are willing to vote on it. The reality is most voters don't care about abortion and the ones that do are mostly not persuadable. The backlash that Democrats are hoping for is highly unlikely to materialize beyond a tiny movement at the margins.

Well yes, we've all come to expect it. The real scandal is the e-mail coupled with their inability to take any sort of action. Or them actively talking about the Need to Codify while actively working against the codification effort.

Then again, when you think it's okay to personally attack someone for pointing out that the emperor has no clothes, you probably have a different perspective on things.

Given that they already have a 6-3 majority, I doubt the SCOTUS conservatives still care much about the GOP's electoral fortunes, at least not the the extent that they'd time decisions to benefit them.

Atlas's is problem is the opposite, they're too stuck on narratives regarding trends, polarizations and voters not switching so their seems to be this kind of stocisim regarding how elections are going to go. Look at how many people disregard every poll that doesn't fit their bias regarding the state, downplay every scandal as meaningless and unirocanily go on rants about how canidate quality is meaningless.

Stocisim about how these things matter is all well and good, but each of one these things. has the possibility to break or change the over all course of elections.
