As much as I dislike Steel, this comment is offensive and he should drop out. We're not winning this race anyway.

This comment by Chen certainly is an ironic and hypocritical one. For one, his own ancestors, some generations ago, would have faced racial discrimination, and slurs of this type or worse. And secondly, the Democratic Party is one that has prided itself-or has professed to pride itself-upon being inclusive and fair towards people of all races and all backgrounds. To have a candidate who does not believe in these values, and who does not conduct himself in accordance with them, undermines the Party and its reputation. Thirdly, the Democratic Party is heavily reliant upon minority voters for its electoral success, and comments like this certainly don't help the Party in holding off a potential Republican trend among these voters.

Ye, this is commendable on his part and isn;t going to bode well as Dem's path to victory in this district is doing well and winning back Asian voters. This district shifted right in 2020 specifically because of Asian voters and they could very well make it red in 2022.

Making fun of or judging people for an accent is always awful. Hopefully this man crashes and burns politically.

Wait, what if he just means figuratively, as in she talks a lot in circles but doesn't actually say anything substantive or meaningful?

Aka Trump

You'd think an ABC would be more sympathetic to 1st gen immigrants having an accent. What a tool.

It‘s a lowkey highkey low blow, and can be very easily taken out of context. But Michelle Steele’s forcing her daughter to leave college for supporting LGBT equality and her COVID-19 hot takes are known quantities among Asian voters in SoCal.

LOL she makes jokes about it herself and Chen is Asian anyway. That's probably enough for the White with college degree voters it'd otherwise effect most.

American-born Chinese. Chen’s parents are first-gen immigrants from Taiwan I believe.

Awful. Steel sucks, no doubt, but this is totally inexcusable and the guy deserves to lose.

You can't constantly complain about wokeness and then demand that Democrat drop out of a race for being "politically incorrect". It might not be the right thing to say out loud, but I have had trouble understanding some of what Steel says when she's been on television. Harsh truth.

This is not a hot take. It is clear all racial wokeness is directed at winning over "educated" whites. Woke politics clearly did Dems no favors with minorities in 2020.

His own last name is Chen and apparently his parents are immigrants from Taiwan. He should be ashamed of his racist comments (his parents certainly should be).

You mean condemnable.

This comment by Chen certainly is an ironic and hypocritical one. For one, his own ancestors, some generations ago, would have faced racial discrimination, and slurs of this type or worse. If you watch the video (which is unlisted on YouTube btw) you'll also hear him say "the more she speaks, the better for us [Dems]" which implies that people can understand what she says about mask mandates and LGBT rights, or are interpreting what she says in ways that would be advantageous to the Dems.

Most criticism of Michelle Steele I've seen online doesn't really have to do with her accent, and tbh that wasn't the main message I got from that clip.
