I was undecided between 1 and 2. I have to say that Kagan has really been impressing me in recent years. She's definitely one of the best writers we've had on the Court in years, right along Justice Scalia. While I respect and appreciate Breyer's service, he's always been at the bottom for me amongst the liberal wing. On the formalism-pragmatism divide on the Court, he's almost always with the latter, which often leads to some unfortunate results in criminal procedure cases (particularly Sixth Amendment cases). I'm hoping KBJ will tilt the balance of the Court more to the formalists in that area.

Barrett is still too new on the Court, so I really didn't know where to place her. Gorsuch is sort of a man of extremes. I either really like what he's saying or he really frightens me. I've already opined on Kavanaugh's writings in this board in the past.

Sotomayor > Kagan > Breyer > Roberts > Barrett? > Kavanaugh? > Gorsuch? > Thomas >>>> Alito

(I could be sold on any order for the three Trump justices, really.)

My ranking would look something like this:

1. Roberts
2. Kagan
3. Gorsuch
4. Kavanaugh
5. Barrett
6. Breyer
7. Thomas
8. Sotomayor
9. Alito

It is interesting, although not too surprising, that most left-leaning posters tend to consider Sotomayor the best Justice, and right-leaning posters tend to consider her the worst Justice. Conversely, right-leaning posters rank Thomas relatively highly, but left-leaning posters tend to rank him at the very bottom.

6. Roberts
7. Kagan
8. Breyer
9. Sotomayor

Hard to place Barrett given her short time on the Court.

I think it's far more interesting seeing more widespread agreement in ranking Alito quite low. I have some suspicions as to the reasonings. Thomas is actually pretty good on the Fourth Amendment, at least in terms of what constitutes a search. Look at a case like Kyllo v. United States.

Personally, I was undecided between Sotomayor and Kagan for my top spot, but I'm a huge fan of Sotomayor's Fourth Amendment jurisprudence.

I'm not convinced Alito has any actual judicial philosophy beyond being a partisan hack. This often puts him on the side of sound interpretation, but not always, and it's a very bad approach to take.

My favorite is Justice Thomas. Least favorite is Justice Gorsuch. I will not be taking questions at this time.

2 (tie). Breyer
2 (tie). Kagan
4. Roberts
5 (tie) Gorsuch
5 (tie) Kavanaugh
7. Barret
8. Alito
9. Thomas

Gorsuch and Kavanaugh are a wash to me. While Gorsuch isn't an emotionally unstable scumbag on
a personal like Kavanaugh, Gorsuch also seems more rigid ideologically, while Kavanaugh thus far has voted closer to Roberts.

Sotomayor
Kagan
Breyer
Roberts
Gorsuch
Alito
Kavanaugh
Barrett
Thomas

Small gap between Roberts and Gorsuch, another gap between Gorsuch and Alito, and a big gap between Barrett and Thomas. Brown-Jackson would maybe be #2 on my list if appointed.
