Which of these states is your favorite Southern state? I put in the names of several border states.

But border states like MO have few areas today that could be considered southern by most any standard. I just spent three days trekking across TX at the beginning of the year and it was only on the  eastern third day that I was encountering towns and people that seemed southern (a lot more was southwestern). If the great majority of a state isn't southern, what purpose does it serve to put it on a list with states that are?

Half of the red avatars are going to vote for Georgia for no reason other than that Biden won it by a quarter of a point.

Anyway:

1. Tennessee
2. Alabama
3. South Carolina
4. Texas
5. Georgia
6. North Carolina
7. Florida

Any others would take a lot of convincing to choose to live in.

Unapologetically Mississippi (which is leading the poll at this exact moment, amusingly.)

And while Mississippi may be my *favorite* Southern state for personal reasons, there are other Southern states that offer more as places to live/visit - Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Texas, namely.

And since I'm now living in Louisiana I'll say this:  New Orleans is obviously one of the most historic, charming and epicurean cities in the country (much less the South, where its only regional competition is Atlanta) but the rest of Louisiana is pretty terrible and NOLA is too distinct/small to exert the same kind of statewide influence even metroes like Nashville or Birmingham do on their respective host states.

Gotta go with Virginia.  Specifically, Northern Virginia.  In fact, the best region in the entire Union.

Why?

Easy.  Because I live here.

I don't consider VA & WVA southern states since I can get to both relatively quickly.  I voted FL.

North Carolina! I would love to move there. I would also happily move to Georgia as well as some parts of Texas and Tennessee. I don't think I would live in any of the other states, but would be happy to visit most of them.

The only one with a Democratic governor.

Others on the shortlist: the two Biden 2020 states on here, and the largest state on here.

Funnily enough, GA is actually coming in third and behind NC and TX (even though TX has passed a bunch of far-right legislation in the past six months).

Major slip on my part - I know LA and KY have Democratic governors, but for some reason I forgot. Well, it shouldn't be too hard to guess which state I was referring to - to clarify, it was NC, the largest of the 3 states, the one whose Democratic governor is the most liberal, and the one who voted Democratic for governor by the largest margin.

Louisiana. Despite all its flaws, the food would make it worth it.

Of the three Southern states (TN, GA, FL) I've lived, TN and GA by far.  FL has truly plummeted in the quality of life at many levels.

1. Kentucky

Every other Southern state is a sh**thole I would never live in.

Been to all of them on the list except WV, MS, LA, and MO.

Best is either Georgia or Oklahoma, I love both of them.

Worst is either Florida or Arkansas, both gross.

All the others are mid-tier, with Alabama on the better end and North Carolina on the worse end, imo.
