Amazing country. The 3 best cities to live in the world right now are probably Istanbul, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur. I've been seriously thinking of getting Turkish citizenship.

FC.

Too much nationalism (and a nasty government), but some of it is understandable - there’s a lot to be patriotic about. Plus, it has a city called Batman.

Despite being a proxy, Turkish Cyprus is even better.

Edit: w.r.t. the government, and in spite of some responsible behaviour on the international stage, Ukrainian Bayraktar memes won’t erase what it does to Armenia and Kurdistan.

HC built on multiple genocides and ethnic cleansing which they keep denying, still has a terrible human rights record and tolerates plenty of ultranationalist and fascist groups, oppresses the Kurds and other minorities and state controlled Islam. Terrible foreign policy with their involvement in the Syrian civil war being particularly evil. Occupies nearly half of Cyprus illegally, keeps violating Greek maritime territory and air space, and tries to control, intimidate and manipulate the Turkish diaspora. Backwards and reactionary social norms in most of the country.

On the plus side: good food, rich archeological history, beautiful old buildings and the Alevis (especially the more semi-pagan ones) and secular Kurds are FFs.

Have to say it is a rather problematic country on balance - Erdogan didn't spring out of nowhere.

Massive FC of course.

If we're judging countries based on their politics, there are very few countries which would pass muster, including the United States.

HC, for the myriad of big and obvious reasons.

It's interesting to note that the FC voters have given very very few actual reasons for their vote.

It has an insanely deep and ancient history, İstanbul is one of the world's great cities, it has excellent music and cuisine, insanely beautiful places, and I know quite a few lovely Turkish people.

Plenty of things to be unhappy about of course but to be honest most of them apply to many other countries too.

so do the good things you mentioned.  You could say the same things about Iran, Russia or Best Korea.

Better than some and worse than others, and its grade has gone down over the last 20 years, but maybe it is seeing an uptick now.

I would unqualifiedly call Iran and Russia FCs too--North Korea is a bit of a complicated case due to the degree of utter totalitarianism pervading everyday life, which is far worse than Iran or Russia, but I'd still probably call it an FC on account of the virtues of traditional Korean culture.

In any case, Turkey is probably a tier above Iran or Russia in terms of civil liberties and democracies, despite being quite bad at both.

oh, I see your FC:HC scale is almost all FC.  That's fine.

To me, I make a guess as to whether the current nation's govt/voters are better than average or not.  Turkey is certainly in the middle somewhere, but their actions towards several other people's (Greeks, Armenians, Kurds, Jews) in the region clearly puts them below the line, IMHO.

The country itsself is beautiful with its cities and landscapes, is rich of culture and has a great cuisine. Its politics are horrible. Population is obviously a mixed bag, as in almost every country.

I have been in Turkey once (Side, at the Mediterranean Sea), and pretty much enjoyed it. It's almost two decades ago, though.

Atarurk had a lot of great ideas. Most of them were subsequently abandoned and still Atarurk was simply less problematic than the Ottomans or Law and Justice. It’s an asshole country. I would open my mind if they recognized what they did during WWI and maybe gave up Constantinople or at least pay indemnities to Greece and Armenia. The natural borders of that country is literally what outlined in the Treaty of Sevres.

God no, the Treaty of Sevres made Versaiiles look ridiculously generous in comparison.

Apart from the Kurdish bits (and we sold the pass there when we declined to support an independent Kurdistan after WW1) its present boundaries are pretty natural I would say.

Well since you asked, I'd have to say I prefer dark meat personally, and yourself?
