Welcome to the Saturday Night Cult Movie.

These will be loosely based on a series of films presented on SBS in the late 1990's by Des Mangan. He had a great eye for films, and these were always a welcome addition on the TV screen. Sex and horror abound as these cult classics take you late into Saturday night. Nearly all the films presented will be R rated and foreign language.

First up, we have a film from Japan from 1996. Mystical spells, naked female ninja assassins, a Kunoichi classic in the genre.

And without further ado, here for your viewing pleasure is:

Lady Ninja - Reflections Of Darkness (1996)

wow

Well, that sure was a movie.  If you watch it at 2x, it's only like 35 minutes.  Less than that if you skip some scenes.

I've watched a lot of bad movies, but not a lot of Japanese bad movies.  I look forward to the rest in the series.

Alright,

Welcome to our 2nd in the Cult Movie series:

Armour of God (1986)

This week's movie stars Jackie Chan as Asian Hawk, an Indiana Jones-style adventurer looking to make a fortune in exotic antiquities.

Just an amazing pre-Hollywood look at the genius of Jackie Chan.

To watch that link, you will need an Australian proxy-vpn and open an account as someone with a birthdate before 2003.

Otherwise, you can just download it on your favourite streaming service.

Warning: (includes fighting, Amazon Females and fighting Amazon Females)

Welcome to our Saturday Night Cult Movie, The White Ribbon.

To get this ready for viewing, recommended for Saturday night, you will need the subtitle version as it is in German (unless you 'sprechen sie Deutsch').

This week's movie is a black and white classic beginning in July, 1913 Germany. The film appears to be a historic and intriguing recollection of events from the memory of a tailor who worked in a farming village.

Award winning director Michael Haneke brings to the screen one of my favourite films I have watched in 2022. An honest and ultimately, very interesting tale of a village in pre-WW1 Germany. Haneke was the director of the film "Funny Games", of which I have seen the later US version.

Haneke's style here is very raw and honest to the period and is unlike any film you have ever seen.

Without further ado, I present for your Saturday night viewing pleasure, Palme D'Or (Cannes) winning film, Das weiße Band (2009).

This week's Saturday Night Cult Movie is a true motion picture classic - Eraserhead (1977)

Initially hated and failing to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival, this film slowly grew in stature over time.

Stanley Kubrick loved it. Steven Spielberg was amazed by its production. One of the most revered cult movies in history.

David Lynch's post-apocalyptic masterpiece made little sense to me as a 18 y.o. when I first saw it, but it made a strong impression. I just remember my stoned friends just looking at the TV screen in amazement at what was going down.

It wasn't until I was in my early 40's that I watched it again, and I found it more moving in terms of storyline, and realised it was in fact a cinematic masterpiece.

Without further ado, for your Saturday Night viewing pleasure, I present to you:

I found out recently that Eraserhead was a groundbreaking film in terms of blurring the lines between diagetic sounds (sounds that are literally happening in the story) and non-diagetic sounds (sounds that the film-maker added into the movie that aren't literally happening in the story... for example, the musical score and soundtrack of a movie are placed on top of scenes, but the music doesn't come from a musician or speakers within the scene).

We see the line between diagetic and non-diagetic sound being blurred in a lot of movies, and it's considered very normal now, but apparently before Eraserhead, it wasn't something that films do. Kind of a random fact but I personally found it to be very cool.

Welcome to our Saturday Night Cult Movie, The Bothersome Man.

As per our previous editions, this movie will require subtitles unless you speak Norwegian.

I have a soft spot for Norway, and always wondered why we cannot get more people from there. This film never really made sense to me, yet I felt very drawn into the storyline and could relate to it immediately. The film features Edvard Grieg in the soundtrack which is pure genius for this subject matter.

Jens Lien produces an absolute masterpiece in the art of film making.

For your Saturday night viewing pleasure, I am pleased to present:

Semi off topic:
Speaking of Norway, the 2021 Norwegian film The Worst Person In The World is excellent and highly recommended. I have not seen The Bothersome Man yet.

Great use of music and tension in a cult classic horror film.
