As far as a 'Red Wave' goes, this is a negative sign for the GOP more for the momentum aspect rather than being an indication for what could happen in November on a national basis. Alaska is a strange state electorally (and in many other senses) and the current electoral system only adds to it.

As for Palin, she'd have been capable of throwing away an election in just about any kind of environment. She became an embarrassment to the GOP base as well as on a wider scale after she resigned as governor.

The polling in PA, OH etc should be more worrying for the GOP than this result.

Amazing news. I had no idea Alaska used ranked-choice now.

Palin will still get another shot in November though right?

Being very much "anti-both parties" in their present form (though, admittedly - more anti-Republican then anti-Democratic) i would (if i could) expand Alaska's system of voting on all 50 states. It would make elections more interesting and less predictable. And sane candidates (now frequently blocked by mad "activists" in party primary) would, most likely, get better chances to be elected...

RCV (combined with compulsory voting) has historically seemed to have a "moderating" effect on both parties of government in Australia, so there's almost certainly some truth in this.

As someone who isn't "moderate" in any sense of the word, this has led to personal disappointment for me, but it probably is healthier for a democracy overall.

I didn’t realise until this that Palin had divorced Todd, and that his parents backed Begich.

WTF??? Huh Huh Huh

When I was taking a look at the endorsement section of the Wikipedia article about the 2022 Alaska's at-large congressional district special election, I thought my pig was whistling.

Take a guess at who endorses Palin's adversary... Shocked Shocked Shocked

Is that supposed to be a joke? Or fake news?

Whoa, Palin is now dating someone from my native Northern Ontario. When I saw his last name is Duguay, I knew he had to be Canadian.

Without RCV, Palin wins the primary and it’s just her and Peltola on the ballot, and Peltola still wins. It’s incredibly stupid to consider the combined first round R vote as the “real” results, but whatever. Cope.

Not really as you wouldnt have Palin and Begich attacking each other literally a day before the election .

I also have to imagine at least some of the exhausted Begich votes may not have fully grasped RCV and would have been a Palin voter in a straight up Palin vs. Pertola election. Still, an amazing day for RCV and democracy!

I didn’t realise until this that Palin had divorced Todd, and that his parents backed Begich.

Also that Begich's prominent family members endorsed Pertola. These family riffs in Alaska are serious!

Nick Begich is the family traitor there; the whole family have always been Democrats.

Does anyone know if they had run the RCV on election night, who would have been ahead?

I’m shocked Peltola only won Anchorage by 6%. I thought it would’ve been by more, given Biden won Anchorage.

The districts in the Anchorage insert take in parts of other boroughs tbf, so it is not a one-to-one comparison.

Edit: The districts in question were won by Trump 52-44, so its swing is in line with the state.

SO. MUCH. WINNING!

I still don't want to get my hopes up for a Democratic House, but a red wave looks increasingly unlikely and I actually fail to see what might change that in two months. Unless the economy all of a sudden tanks, Biden has a major scandal or Republicans become more rational, it's not clear on what message they actually want to make big gains. "Biden bad" and hardcore opposition to abortion isn't going to make it. Yes, these special elections have limited implication, but the overall picture points to a neutral year or red ripple at best. Republicans may still be more likely to take the House than not, their margin will almost certainly be underwhelming for the midterm of a first term president.

That makes a lot more sense then. She had to have won Anchorage proper by double digits then, since the blood red districts in the MatSu valley are propping up Palin’s 47% in the metro.

Looks like an above average performance for Peltola in Yup'ik areas; would be interested in precinct results to see if it's a district thing or not.

I think the swing is universal everywhere except Fairbanks. Peltola’s old House district really stands out.

Imagine walking into an Anchorage hospital 49 years ago and telling everyone that that recently born baby girl to a Yupik family was going to be the next person to represent Alaska in the US House.

And then also imagine telling them that the new Senator from Delaware just elected the previous year was going to be President when she took office.
Great post.

The Begich family as a whole is kinda weird politicaly and I don't think Nick Begich being an infowars guest is that much of a suprise given even the democrat members have tended to be a bit kooky.

Someone mentioned it in the special election megathread. It's one of many interesting little tidbits of trivia pertaining to this race.
