Isn't Mitt a legend in Utah, so why should he be concerned?
The problem for Romney is that he is a legend with Utah Democrats, and they don't vote in Republican primaries.

But the Utah GOP primary base is not Trump-friendly.

You forget those who left to become Democrats over the years, the McMuffin vote for example.

So the GOP primary voters are more working class and minorities this time than in the past.

Except in Utah.

In 2020 Ds voting in the R primary for governor almost cost Spencer Cox the nomination.

I always check just to be sure, because it differs from state to state:

https://ballotpedia.org/Republican_Party_primaries_in_Utah,_2022

"In Utah, parties decide who may vote in their primaries. Registered Democrats and unaffiliated voters may vote in the Democratic primary. Only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary."

That was a recent change to attempt to prevent this. So now they register as Republicans. It's a whole thing.

The voters that won Spencer Cox the gubernatorial primary and Blake Moore UT-01 aren’t going to go against Romney.

Cox is not going to endorse Romney? Interesting. I thought he's more of a moderate or old school conservative that Romney is pretty much in line with.

Honestly Wilson running could take votes from Romney and split the vote for Reyes.
Him and Cox are moderate Republicans in the vein of DeWine or Collins, if he's seriously running I think he might have inside information that Romney isn't running.

I hope Romney either doesn’t run, or gets his behind primaried. He’s one of the biggest RINOs in the Senate rn.

Whatever I may think of Mitt Ronmey, he means something to Mormons in Utah that goes beyond his record as a Senator.  He's an historic figure; the ONLY Mormon nominated for President (who came close to winning).  As such, Romney will be cut a LOT of slack.  I cannot imagine Utah NOT nominating or reelecting Mitt Romney, simply for who he is in terms of the history of Mormons.  He's a Mormon hero, and people don't just crap on their heroes at the ballot box easily.

https://www.abc4.com/news/politics/riverton-mayor-announces-candidacy-for-sen-mitt-romneys-seat-in-u-s-senate/
Quote
Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs announced on Tuesday he will be running for U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney’s seat in the U.S. Senate during the 2024 election.

In his campaign announcement made on social media, Staggs claimed Washington is broken and “enough is enough.”

“We have more IRS agents than border agents, and while we are paying $4 a gallon for gas, they’re sending our money unchecked to Ukraine,” said Staggs in a video posted to social media. “Now, we are almost $32 trillion in debt.”

I genuinely have no idea what he's gonna do. He's fund-raising like he's retiring, but he talks like he's running again.

He lost a landslide in 2012 to OBAMA and blocked Voting Rights, he didn't want to face a bruising primary

I feel like Brad Wilson is probably the frontrunner now, given he’s raised a lot of money and has local endorsements. Jason Chaffetz would also be a strong contender, if he runs. He’d probably take a lot of support from Trent Staggs.

Sean Reyes looked like a likely candidate at one point, but hasn’t made moves recently. So I think he declines to run (maybe he’s waiting to run for Governor instead?). But maybe an open seat changes things?

Who else may run, now that Romney is out?

I’m disappointed Romney isn’t running again, but not surprised. From a Democrats’ perspective, Romney is probably the best Senator we could’ve gotten from Utah. I unfortunately expect a MAGA type candidate to win now.

We are getting Alsobrooks, Gallego, Kunce maybe ALLRED in the S, more Ds and you are upset Romney is gone and don't forget he supported 20% Corporate taxes in 2012 and blocked Voting Rights with SINEMA

Biden is at 48/52 with those Approvals ALLRED can win

Obama ran ads on Romney Bain Capital that took employees 401 K like Enron

He probably thinks he can’t win a primary again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he was watching the UT-02 special primary to make his decision.

Good riddance. His replacement will vote the same way on almost every issue. Mittens just pretended like there was nothing he could do to stop Trump, whereas his replacement will actively encourage Trump. So six of one, half a dozen of the other.
