Unlike the rest of Europe and the First world itself, Serbia has been the only European country outside of Belarus in which there has been huge pro Putin rallies, and even it's leader would not issue sanctions against Russia.

In reality it has more to do with the Yugoslavian wars but historical grudges run deep just like India and the Bangladesh war.

Serbia benefits from weakening the international order, like Russia, cause then Kosovo and Bosnia are potentially back on the menu.

Errr I'd suggest looking at how Serbia was formed & some of the events that happened in the 1990s.

What is happening is that NATO did not finish the job in 1999.

I still remember how at the end of Anna Karenina, the Vronsky dude goes to volunteer to fight for Serbian independence against the Ottoman Turks. This pan-Slavic friendship goes back a long time.

Serbs are notoriously big fans of Russia.

The former Yugoslavia was similar to the Soviet Union in terms of one Slavic group, the Serbs, having dominance over a pan-Slavic, 'federal' state. That state collapsed and the Serbs fought brutal and genocidal wars against it's neighbours and internal minorities.

So easy one really.

Yeah, but they’re going to struggle to cope with that for a long time to come.

In what way, exactly?

And, much like Russians, Serbs had and have on-the-surface-very-compelling WWII-related whataboutery to use to justify themselves. Two peas in a pod, plus the very long history of Russia as Serbia's main international patron that others in this thread have mentioned.

I suppose NATO going on a massive campaign against “international law” has something to do with it

A lot of vanity of tiny differences.

The Serbs arguably have the most "kinship" with Russia of any of the South Slavic peoples. Like Russians, they are Eastern Orthodox Christians, unlike the Catholic Croats and Slovenes or the Muslim Bosniaks.

During the Balkan Wars, Russia gave the Serbs a lot of support.

And Serbia followed a somewhat more Russian-style political trajectory after independence. While other former Yugoslav states pursued integration with the EU and liberalization, Serbia initially tried to continue with Titoist-style socialism (Milosevic's wife was an unrepentant, unreconstructed communist who made Margot Honecker look like Raisa Gorbachev) and when that didn't work, just replaced it with very insular nationalism similar to Putin's.

When I went to Bosnia in 2003, they viewed Serb's as semi-Russians.

Orthodox Chetniks with AK-47's. The Serbian troops received support from Russia.

The Serbians have always been pro-Russian.

Russia and Greece are Serbia's closest soul-mates. A lot of wars fought together, a lot of blood shared, etc.

The Greeks dislike "FYROM" far more than they dislike Albanians, Kosovars, and OTAN.  They are integral members of NATO, after all.

Don't get me wrong...they were most definitely racist, but in a largely ironic manner.  Anyone who wasn't Greek was a "Gypsy".  And that always gave me the giggles.

Did they ever ask for your tears to protect them from AIDS?
