Started in the 60s as an offshoot of the Nation of Islam. Its core belief is, as the name suggests, that 5% of black people are truly woken up to reality and their mission is to liberate the other 85% from the 10% who align with the white ruling class.

It might also be just another footnote in history but many, if not most, of the biggest names in 80s/90s East Coast hip hop were affiliated. It counted the entire Wu-Tang Clan, Jay-Z, Nas, Busta Rhymez, and LL Cool J, among others, as followers at one point or another.

The 5%ers are a strange bunch in viewing the NoI as both a conservative do-nothing organization unwilling to uplift black people by direct action and a sect that gave up their isolationist racialism to build community links—and ultimately had several leaders pay the price for it by probable assassinations by the authorities. As they exist right now they are basically a motivational speaker group for spiritual and angsty lower middle income blacks

I just cannot sympathize with this bizarre belief system which makes no sense. Never understood the Yakub story.
