As long as nukes are on the table at all, then the world is a lost cause.
I'll concede your point... but that doesn't make this the Cuban Missile Crisis 2.0.

Yeah, it makes it worse because there's a madman with nothing to lose on one side and a US President who'll puff himself up till he can't back down. I know what this song and dance looks like.

People like you will deny a nuclear war will ever happen when the world has been turned to ash.

None of the geopolitical experts are particularly concerned about a nuclear war right now. Either they're all wrong and you're the one who's right, or you're not being rational. Which one do you think it is?

I don't put much stock in 'experts' anymore because I've learnt that putting stock in other people is a good way to be completely let down. And all the education in the world is no substitute for what I can see going on in front of me.

Putin could conquer all of Ukraine and Biden wouldn’t do anything. Anyone claiming there will be a war is either delusional, ignorant of political realities, or a Kremlin stooge trying to talk up war to make Putin seem reasonable.

My only worry is if Russia interprets Poland becoming sanctuary for retreating Ukrainian forces counts as an "act of aggression," and it goes to war with Poland thinking NATO couldn't be invoked.

I'm sure a lot of people thought similarly in July 1914

I'd say it is better to have one person warning of a hypothetical possibility, however fringe it might be, than not. It makes for a varied discourse. So I'd like to thank you for keeping us abreast of the importance of peace.

I must say these Russia threads have reached an astonishing level of delusion.

Nothing will happen. At least nothing that goes beyond limited action in Eastern Ukraine. No WW3. No Russo-American war. No nukes. No NATO involvement. Nothing.

Aged like milk.

When's the last time the US actually declared war in the first place?

June 1942, against Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania.

The West should declare war on Russia. Make them pay for what they are doing. Sanctions won't help if Russia can turn to China (and others).

If the West allows this to happen, what will stop Putin from attacking the Baltic states, from invading Moldova? Stand up now or the price for doing so later will only get higher.

And no, there is nothing neoconservative about helping a sovereign nation.

What did I miss?

Russian invasion of Ukraine, targeting of airports throughout the country. Air raid sirens are blaring in Kyiv, and the backup sanction plans by Western nations are coming into action.

Highly skeptical that the situation escalates between a Russo-Ukraine war, but based on Putin's latest rambling speech, he's authorised a full scale invasion.

Still inconceivable that NATO and Russia come to blows.

Nah, that won't happen.

That said, if Putler is insane enough to attack the Baltics or other NATO members, it would automatically trigger a war. I don't think it's likely, but after today, I wouldn't 100% rule it out.

No, it would be insane to declare war on Russia. Nuclear powers should not directly go to war these days. The only reason the Cold War had a happy ending was that the US and the Soviet Union didn't directly go to war with each other, and certainly there were plenty of opportunities to do so. Fortunately most senior leaders at that time lived through WWI and WWII as adults and they knew that doing it again with nuclear weapons would be the end of the world. Today's senior leaders, even very old ones like Biden, have not really lived through hell. The worst they have seen in their adult lifetimes is something like Vietnam. That is why I worry.

That being said, there should be crippling sanctions and troops should be deployed to Eastern Europe.

Nuclear powers also shouldn't use their status as a nuclear power to invade their neighbors for no reason other than territorial expansion. We are well past the World of shoulds. If Putin wants a nuclear war, that is on him.
