https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21203700-cnn-poll-neither-biden-trump-democrats-republicans-support-president-2024

45% of Democrats/Dem-leaning indies think Biden should run again, while 51% don't.

50% of Republicans/GOP-leaning indies think Trump should run again, while 49% don't.

I know this is splitting hairs, but technically the respondents were not being asked whether Biden and Trump should run again.  The question is about who the parties should nominate, and it’s:

Among Dems:
Someone Else 51%
Biden 45%

Among Republicans:
Trump 50%
Someone Else 49%

Just wanted to mention that because, as I recall from past polling, the number of Republicans who say they want Trump to run again is at least a bit higher than those who say that he’s currently their 1st choice for the nomination.

The poll also notes some past results on this question….

Dems being asked about their choice for 1996 Dem. nominee in November 1994:
Clinton 55%
Someone Else 35%

Dems being asked about their choice for 2012 Dem. nominee in March 2010:
Obama 76%
Someone Else 20%

Republicans being asked about their choice for 2020 GOP nominee in March 2018:
Trump 75%
Someone Else 20%

Then we have this poll question asking those Dems who don’t want Biden why they prefer someone else:
Don’t think he can win against the GOP nominee 35%
Don’t want him to be reelected president 31%
Some other reason 34%

Over half the people who said “some other reason” said that the “other reason” was Biden’s age.

Is there a specific person you’d like to see the Democratic Party nominate, or do you just want someone besides Biden?

Just someone besides Biden 72%
A specific person 25%

The top choices for “a specific person”:
Sanders 5%
M. Obama 4%
Buttigieg 2%
Harris 2%
Warren 1%
Ocasio-Cortez 1%
Oprah Winfrey 1%
Booker 1%

Then we have this poll question asking those Republicans who don’t want Trump why they prefer someone else:
Don’t want him to be president again 39%
Don’t think he can win against the Dem. nominee 22%
Some other reason 38%

The top choices amongst those who said “some other reason”:
need someone new/better
too polarizing/disliked/divisive
his personality/need someone with different traits

Is there a specific person you’d like to see the GOP nominate, or do you just want someone besides Trump?

Just someone besides Trump 60%
A specific person 38%

The top choices for “a specific person”:
DeSantis 21%
Trump Jr. 1%
Crenshaw 1%
Paul 1%
Haley 1%
Pence 1%
Cruz 1%
T. Scott 1%
