Three term New York governor and liberal firebrand Mario Cuomo was eyeing a fourth and potentially last term. He wanted to win again in '94, bow out in 1998 and potentially make a last run at president in 1996 or 2000...

Little known suburban state Senator George Pataki won the NYGOP primary after influential Sen. Al D'Amato endorsed Pataki and was his confidante.

Pataki upset Cuomo in one of the biggest upsets in recent history.

Who would you vote for, in hindsight?

Mario Cuomo, both with and without hindsight.

What's wrong with George Pataki? He was not that controversial.

1994 was the first year I voted in NY. Voted for Pataki "knowing" that he will lose.  Was shocked later that night when he won.

Coumo, but Pataki was a fairly decent Governor, all things being considered.

Were you more surprised by Pataki winning or Republicans winning the House

I remember the 1994 election pretty well.  On election day it was pretty clear that the GOP was going to win the House.  In theory  Pataki and Cuomo were neck-to-neck in the polls but I just figured that Cuomo had incumbent advantage and Golisano will split the anti-Cuomo vote.  I was then pleasantly surprised at the comfortable Pataki victory.
