NYT: DeSantis says he "will not bend the knee" to Trump, supporting him in 2024 is "too much to ask".

Good.

I’ll be THRILLED if DeSantis knocks off Trump.

His policies might be bad but I’m convinced the “lose the election, overturn it and rig it” thing wouldn’t have nearly as much steam coming from someone else.

DeSantis hasx to win reelection, hopefully he loses but he's not assuming anything, he's Favored but no one knows what a wave will look like on Oct blue or red wave but an R wave is less likely with 3.0 Unemployment rate unlike 10 percent unemployment in 2010

It's gonna be a Neutral Environment 304/234 map or blue 🌊🌊🌊🌊

Like I've said, the fact that no one can come of out the freak-show that is a Trump Administration with their reputation intact (either amongst normal people or amongst Trump supporters) makes it so that it is practically suicidal to team up with Donald Trump or do anything other than the typical party-line endorsement that governors can get away with. DeSantis will win reelection in 2022 and (I believe) be term-limited after that, and if Trump wins in 2024 then his VP will be the shoo-in for 2028's nomination and then in 2032 if he wins, so why wouldn't DeSantis try to win the nomination in 2024 while he has a chance? It'll be tough because extremist Republicans by and large worship Trump as a messiah, but DeSantis is more in line with what a lot of the new coalition wants to see achieved and Trump is the one being aggressive and divisive because of that. This is not a 2016 situation where you have washed-up Republicans babbling about the estate tax. In this case, DeSantis is more true to the Trump promises than Trump ever was, which is why he has just a sliver of a chance.

DeSantis would easily wipe the floor with Biden. This isn't a candidacy you should be hoping for unless you desire a huge Republican majority government.

Unless Trump starts praising Democrats or the left in general, the nomination is his to lose if he runs.

I'm sure that as far as MillenialModerate is concerned 2024 is Safe Republican regardless of the nominee.

Really this is something DeSantis should say if Trump complains about rigged election :

“So you are telling us that a rigged election happened while you were President and you were so incompetent that you couldn’t do anything about that”

And when trump brings up cultural issues

“All you did was cry like a baby on Twitter , while I got things done on X”

The way you beat Trump is make him look like a beta loser

I clearly side with DeSantis over Trump, but to be fair, elections are handled by the states, and President cannot do much.

Maybe not but it’s still a good zinger to use against Trump .

Trump turning the base against the Republicans' strongest general election opponent would be absolutely hilarious.

I agree with the sentiment here, but those lines would be a mistake. DeSantis has an advantage in that he can bring up the red meat issues for the base, like the voting restrictions and anti-COVID measures, while it is Trump that keeps whining about how mean everyone was five years ago. DeSantis should let Trump cry and then just say something simple like, "Mr. President, I think the voters deserve a candidate who is prepared to take down the left rather than one who just wants to argue amongst ourselves . . . " or something like that and then get back to fear-mongering about Radical Liberals.

The problem is, "the election was stolen" is what the base wants to hear. If DeSantis were to say this it would be the end of his political career.

Which is why you don’t frame it on was it stolen or not but rather that Trump is an incompetent beta that it means that happened on his watch.

The goal is turn Donald Trump into Jeb Bush

Other Republicans trying to out-Trump Trump generally hasn't worked spectacularly for them, and I'm not sure why anyone who dislikes Trump would want another Republican to try and go further than him.

DeSantis was extremely lucky Donald Trump won Florida in 2020. If Biden won and DeSantis certified the election result, which he would have been forced to sooner or later, Trump would have abandoned him right away and endorsed a primary challenger. Just ask Brian Kemp.

I'm pretty sure that's what ultimately destroyed Rubio in 2016. He never stood a chance really, but when he started whining and insulting people on the debate stage, that was when whatever semblance of a chance he had left went down the drain.

It’s not really about out Trumping Trump but rather take what is viewed as his biggest strength (him being alpha ) and turn it into his greatest weakness . The strategy should not be to go “Trumpier than Trump” on policy or rhetoric but make Trump look like a beta that he actually is.

The debate should not be about Trump’s policies or rhetoric as that only helps him but rather a debate on how he actually did nothing on any of those issues but cry .

That’s not what I am saying though. It’s pretty much pulling a strategy of turning your opponent strength into their weaknesses.

Trump still leads Desantos by 35 points. Sure, he might be slowly "catching up" (assuming that trend continues) but Trump retains the vast majority of resources, money and party loyalty.

I frankly hope Desantos does not win the primary under any circumstances.

I, a former Republican voter, would be much more comfortable with the prospects of a DeSantis presidency than I would be for a second Trump term.

Trump returning to office would be an end to American democracy as we know it.
