It's no secret that the Republican party currently contains a rather large anti-vax contingent, but Trump, especially recently, has come out pretty strongly in favor of the vaccine. In addition, there has been a somewhat notable history of opposition to Trump in certain far-right circles over the past few years, although so far this has mostly failed to materialize much in electoral politics. How much of an opening is there for a potential challenge to a Trump 2024 candidacy from the right, and how big of a primary vote share could a candidate hope to gain from this strategy? In addition, who are some potential names who could make a serious attempt at this sort of campaign?

Tucker Carlson, perhaps. He has critiqued Trump from the right plenty of times, and has the reach to build a base in a primary.

Ron DeSantis' latest rhetoric might be an indicator, although I doubt he really runs against Trump.

He has criticized Trump from [populist] left, too. For instance, he has repeatedly praised some of Warren's (and Sanders'?) policies.

To me, Tucker has always been more Trumpian than Trump himself. But he shouldn't go anti-vaxx.

So I can't really consider him as a from-the-right challenger. DeSantis is imho much more typical "right" in that sense.

Possibly Ted Cruz or Ron DeSantis. I wouldn’t be surprised if DeSantis challenges Trump and does similar to Reagan when he was up against Ford.

Wonder what Cruz’s lane would be. The Tea Party brand, and harping on the need for small government  as a principle (rather than specific things like gun control or anti-vaxx/masks), is pretty gone by now.

Carlson is the only person popular enough and has the skills to know the base enough to at least put a dent in Trump's primary margins.

Tom Cotton.

He has a good resume, and is well-positioned to go after Trump for being a "fake" conservative. (Since conservationism no longer has any real meaning he can shape that as he likes, but likely targets for attack are Trump's wealth and atrocious behavior, along with anything else Cotton thinks will appeal.) Cotton appears to have stayed away from the craziest trends of the Trump-era, leaving him able to both simultaneously claim to be an honest conservative and a sane Republican.

(To be clear, I think Cotton would be as bad or worse for America as other GOP nominees, but I also think he's in a far better position to challenge Trump or win the general than figures like Cruz, Carlson, or DeSantis.)

Tom Cotton, now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

He was always mentioned in the same breath as Hawley but unlike Hawley he hasn't done anything of note since his "the military should be sent to control the inner city riots" NYT editorial in 2020. Cotton has been forgotten.

Is there one yet? Maybe Vivek Ramaswamy in some limited theoretical way?

I like how Tom Cotton is still forgotten.

Most of them will challenge Trump from the right on economic and foreign policy. On social/cultural issues, it's a wash. I think that everyone will just try to out-unwoke each other.

If you look at recent comments on abortion, DeSantis is pretty clearly to Trump's right.  He just doesn't pick fights with his opponents to the extent that Trump does.

Unless they’re gay teenagers or beloved American mass media company.
