This guy represents my university!

Not terribly surprising, he's been around forever. Look to State Sen. Robert Peters or State Reps. Curtis Tarver and Kam Buckner.

A civil rights icon and fixture of Illinois politics. Will no doubt be a competitive race for the majority-Black seat.

Time for a comeback by someone who has tried for this seat before, Barak Hussein Obama.

Rush is the only person who has ever defeated Barack Obama in a primary or general election (not counting individual 2008 contests between Obama and Clinton). Obama challenged him in the Democratic House primary for IL-01 in 2000 and was defeated. Rush is the Dean of Illinois' congressional delegation, and IL-01 has been held by a black Representative for longer than any other congressional district. It has had consistent black representation since 1929.

This would be genuinely interesting and I bet there will be some folks telling him to do it.

It will never happen but there is precedence, John Quincy Adams was elected to Congress after his presidency.

The primary is already a clown car, this could easily go the way of FL-20.

Someone else on Twitter stated that it would be easier to list what Southside politicians weren't going to run for this seat.

Sort of funny that he made so many demands about his district lines - screwing over Casten or Newman - only to then turn around and retire.

From what I've read, Malia Obama apparently isn't interested in a political career, although she would obviously have considerable help from her parents and their political allies in Illinois if she decided to embark upon one.

On a side note, I am about five months older than her.

One would argue that some of his greatest work was done as a representative in the House.

From what I know of Rush, he's had a politically undistinguished career, like many backbenchers in the House. He apparently wore and raised a hoodie when giving a speech about police brutality some years ago and was scolded by the Speaker pro tempore for doing so. And he's said some controversial things. And of course, many of these Democratic Representatives from urban districts tend to actually do very little for their constituents, and to financially benefit from their office. In this, he was no different.

In fact, most historians believe Adams was a better Representative than he was a President.

Based on his post-presidential activity I don't think Obama is very interested in a JQA-esque second act.

Hopefully this leads to a crowded primary that gives Chris Butler a shot.

Historically if someone underage got elected they tend to have been seated. There have been atleast seven cases of someone younger then 25 serving in the house (William Claiborne was just 21)

Rooting for Senator Robert Peters here, though this has the potential to turn into a large field.
