Bill de Blasio is hated among the NYC metro area amongst Democrats, Republicans and Independents. While it is said that New York City residents should care than outside members, he's unpopular nationally. Lori Lightfoot is the same thing.
8 years ago, in 2013, de Blasio was a progressive star who fought against the corporate centrist law and order policies of the 20 years of Giuliani and Bloomberg. He fought against stop and frisk, police abuses.
I think his first year when Eric Garner was killed in a chokehold by police and the crazed gunman killed the two police officers sitting in a patrol car cost him any political capital. He lost the police unions, Long Island, who hates him and whose Republicans run ads against him to tie suburban Democrats to him; and he lost the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, his frenemy.
He won reelection in 2017 because NYC is a Democratic stronghold, Republicans don't have a Giuliani or Bloomberg to compete anymore.
He hands the mayoralty as a lame duck, two-term mayor to black moderate Democrat Eric Adams, a former NYPD captain who faced resistance from old-head cops like Bernie Kerik, Pat Lynch, etc. Adams is trying to make peace with the old guard German-Italian-Irish that despised de Blasio despite hiring Bratton, O'Neill and Shea as police commissioners--all Irish cops in the generations of their mothers and fathers.
Are you surprised de Blasio fizzled?
