imo its impact on Mecca has been more fiscally conservative and its impact on Medina has been more socially conservative

What makes this joke even funnier is the fiscal reality of the Saudi projects in Mecca (sanctified by Wahhabism, naturally.)

The al-Saud are not anti-modern at all, quite the opposite; they’re aggressively anti-history, specifically the rich history within the cradle of Islam. Truly a cursed regime.
