Last years (Not) State of the Union rebuttal was delivered by Tim Scott, which was not a bad choice.

They need republicans that can satisfy both Trump and the more establishment McConnell wing of the party. It won't be someone like Gaetz, but it also won't be someone like Kinzinger either.

I came up with some ideas for 2022, 2023, and 2024 of possible contenders.

I put it in this sub-forum as these typically help build traction for a presidential run.

  • Ron DeSantis (if Trump doesn't throw a fit)
  • Kristi Noem
  • Glenn Youngkin
  • Winsome Sears
  • Rick Scott (lacks charisma but is friends with both Trump and McConnell)
  • Elise Stefanik
  • Greg Abbott
  • Mehmet Oz
  • Rand Paul
  • Adam Laxalt (if he wins)

Any other possible contenders?

The smartest idea may be to pick a Governor just because their office provides for impressive optics.

Ron DeSantis may be seen as too politically loaded since he's likely running for President. That's going to be piss off his primary challengers.

You also wouldn't want someone who has taken a major stand against Trump, or in favor of conspiracy nonsense.

Kay Ivey could make sense. She's popular in her state, looks like a polite older woman, and isn't running for President, so she doesn't threaten anyone else in the party.

Nah, Ivey's too old. It's usually given to someone who's seen as a rising star.

I could see it being Youngkin or Stefanik.

I'd guess Trump will give the response himself (or a competing response to the official Republican response).

If Trump doesn't give the response, probably Marjorie Taylor Greene.

There's a good chance that it's Trump himself.

Best possible option (for the Democrats - and likely for any would-be Trump replacements among the GOP). He'll be a hit with the cult, but go over like the proverbial lead balloon with everyone else.

I bet Noem gets a crack at it.

Trump loves her and she is sane compared to some.

As the guy sort of leading the charge against Biden at the moment, and the presumptive favorite going into 2024, apart from Trump (at least for now), DeSantis seems like the obvious choice. However, I think picking him would ruffle Trump's feathers too much, so I doubt he gets picked. Maybe Noem, but I think someone young, dynamic and non-White is more likely.

I'm going to say Byron Donalds.

Glenn Youngkin seems like a pretty good bet for 2022, maybe some newer House member like Byron Donalds or Beth Van Duyne.

Looking at Obama's second term, the English-language Republican responses to the SOTU were delivered by

2014:  a new, female member of Republican House leadership (Cathy McMorris Rodgers)
2015:  a newly-inagurated female senator (Joni Ernst)
2016:  a second-term female governor (Nikki Haley)

if the GOP stuck with the same profiles for 2022-24, it would be something like

2022:  Elise Stefanik
2023:  Jane Timken?
2024:  Kim Reynolds or Kay Ivey, lol

It's not going to be Marjorie Taylor Greene. The Republican establishment does not like her as much as the Democratic establishment likes the squad.

I think Youngkin's too soon. I could see it being Stefanik. She's a member of House leadership they want to promote. And it's a way to show that Liz Cheney wasn't replaced by a lunatic. She was replaced by a policy wonk and young mom.

Any predictions on who gets to deliver the 2023 rebuttal?

I could see it going to Katie Britt.

Maybe a new establishment house member like Juan Ciscomani, Jen Kiggans, or John James.

It would be funny if getting to deliver the rebuttal was one of the concessions given to Gaetz.

Interesting choice.

I thought she might be in the running but didn't think they'd actually go through with it.

It's a safe choice.

She's not running for President or even expected to, she has faced tons of hostile media before, and she is close to her average party voter.
So she has no pressure to perform, has the experience, and "speaks" republican.

She's not Bobby Jindal.

I imagine Trump will insert himself into the response and then you will hear the fool talk about himself and how great he is! Yada yada blah blah! He would be incapable of addressing or rebutting any part of Biden's speech! We'd hear Sleepy Joe this and that, the nasty FBI and how he's a victim of a raid and DOJ! Then he'd vent on about how disloyal Nikki Haley and Ron DeSantis are...can't believe how scared Trump is of DeSantis (the guy can't stop complaining and whining about Ron DeSantis....he's nearly wetting himself).

This schtick is interesting, but will be sad to see it come to a close when DeSandwich loses to Trump in the primaries, or if Trump chooses not to run, loses to Biden by 150+ EV in the general.

DeSandwich is a solid governor from my time in the state this year, but not a national-caliber politician.
