Lol at the fact that this district will likely be won by f**king Menendez's kid. Especially considering the fact that Democrats unsurprisingly have a bunch of legislators/local officials in the district and he's not one of them.

You'd think since New Jersey Democrats have a deep bench in the area, maybe someone stronger than Bob Menendez Jr wins the nomination?

Maybe someone like Ras Baraka or Steven Fulop would be interested in carpetbagging over here.

I think God likes to troll us, as he not only lets the worst Senator in the country to stay put, but has his son be in the House. Just Great.

State Sen. Teresa Ruiz?

Ruiz would fit the district better, but I'd argue that Baraka and Fulop might have better name recognition in the district.

Neither of them are Hispanic though. Baraka would be a good fit to be Payne’s successor one day, but not for this seat. Fulop’s future seems to be on a statewide level.

Probably because he isn’t Hispanic and may struggle in a primary.

If you have a "Jr.", "III", or anything similar after your name, a certain type of ideologically and morally contentless self-ordained power broker will automatically assume you must be a strong candidate because The Old Blood Runs True in you or something. New Jersey has a disproportionate number of such people in its political scene, as well as a disproportionate number of the sorts of people willing to pimp themselves out claiming on the news that criticizing someone whose "Jr." or "III" comes after a Spanish name is racist.

I guess the one silver lining of the avalanche of retirements that precedes a midterm wipeout is that it tends to dislodge the aging backbenchers in safe seats and force generational turnover.

There are going to be a lot more "Too damn old to be in the minority" retirements. Not relevant to the actual math, but still a bad omen.

The activist left has never really won a primary in NJ, so the odds are this will just be a machine replacement who serves for several decades without distinction.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but his no-name challenger actually did a lot better than people thought he would?

The "activist left" hadn't won a primary in Missouri or suburban Chicago either. The idea that a group of people whose sole purpose is to promote change can't because they haven't yet is always one of the worst takes on this website, and one that is constantly proven wrong (and that's even despite our own activist left delusions about what is and isn't possible). This is a pretty urban district and a pretty unpredictable community with lots of complicated parts. If the corrupt son of a corrupt Senator is the establishment choice for their candidate, at bare minimum you'll see the left be competitive here.

Mayor of Belleville is whispering about a campaign, maybe as an independent. Endorsed Ciattarelli and could do well as an outsider in the Democratic primary or even as an independent D, if Menendez Jr. is the anointed.
