So people will freeze and starve during power outages. Great.

But hey, 100 years from now the Earth will be 0.000001 degree cooler.

Not exactly trend setting.

Quote
New York is not alone. Berkeley, Calif., became the first city in the U.S. to ban gas hookups in new construction in 2019, and now at least 42 cities in California, including San Francisco and San Jose, have acted to limit gas in new buildings. Salt Lake City and Denver have also made plans to move toward electrification. And notably, Ithaca, N.Y., recently took the step to convert all of its buildings, not just new construction, to heat pumps and electric ranges over gas.

If you guys actually read the article instead of strawmanning, here's where this law would apply to.

...The ban will apply to new structures under seven stories tall starting in 2024 and to larger buildings in 2027...

During a power outage, electricity is unavailable. In buildings without natural gas, electricity is the energy source for heating and cooking. Thus people in these buildings will starve and freeze during prolonged power outages.

The law also bans the use of coal.

Tons of people live in buildings with electric heat in colder climates than New York. Somehow they survive.

The vast majority of gas furnances (pretty much all of the ones used in residential settings) require electricity to function.

It's good to make the move, if for no other reason you don't have to worry about deadly gas leaks.

Also my heat is gas and it is non functional if the power goes out. Sure the pilot light stays lit but it doesn't pump heat for me. On older setups maybe there's no issue. But this only applies to new buildings anyway.

PG&E is very good at using both gas and electricity to burn down neighborhoods.
