Clinton, Janesville, And milton were examples of what used to be called sundown towns in my state, and given most AA's in WI live in either Milwaukee, Beloit, Racine/Kenosha, or Madison this is typical of not that urban Midwestern america.

Apparently Kennewick once was. From what I can tell, it looks like the restrictions ended in around 1963 or thereabouts.

I'm in Texas. For sure we had sundown towns. Probably too many to list.

CA probably had some, unfortunately, but most likely zero exist here today.

Edit: This article details it all, in all its sad detail.

Why am I not surprised that Chevy Chase and Silver Spring are ex-sundown towns?

Roland Park in northern Baltimore, one of the first purpose-built suburbs in the country, once held similar restrictions as well, and there and Chevy Chase also had local laws discriminating against Jews.

Hawaii and Alaska presumably? Simply because of them becoming states so recently in relative terms.

Probably none. The horrifying phenomenon was sadly widespread.

Do any states still have them today? California used to have many, but probably doesn’t have any sundown towns anymore.

I doubt they'd be legal even if the law is technically on the books.

Edina was kind of notoriously as such, as well as heavily anti-Semitic. In fact a lot of neighborhoods in Edina even made sure to put in their contracts when selling houses that the house could not be resold to Jews.

BTW this is how the notable Jewish population in St. Louis Park came to be, up until the 60s it was one of the only municipalities in Hennepin County that didn't explicitly discriminate against Jews, so many of them settled there. The only other such municipality in Hennepin County was Minnetonka, and it has a notably high Jewish population as well.

Does this explain differences in the voting patterns between Minnetonka and Eden Prairie?

Manhattan Beach was a prime example of rejecting residence to citizens of color.

Manhattan Beach was a sundown town, but isn’t one anymore. Glendale, California and Goshen, Indiana passed resolutions condemning their past sundown practices. Is Cullman, Alabama still one today?

That's mostly Eden Prairie being Eden Prairie. The epitome of a snooty upper class suburb. A place that it's strange to imagine even voting D, much less >60% D.

Probably not, considering they elected a Black Democratic State Rep. in 2008 and he performed respectably while losing in 2010. James Fields!

In Illinois, I don't think there are anymore sundown towns here (Thank God!). However, examples of such former ones definitely include Cicero, Deerfield, and Anna.

No, although post-sundown towns still do have racial issues. Recovering from that old mentality takes a long time.

In New Jersey, Spring Lake, Carteret, Cherry Hill, Jamesburg, Englishtown, Old Bridge, Cliffwood, and Clifton were sundown towns as recently as the 1960s.

NJ: It's not really a sundown town, but as someone who's not an Orthodox Jew, I feel like I would probably have trouble living in Lakewood.
