A Catholic isolationist in WV who strongly supported Al Smith after backing isolationist Harding and West Virginian Davis. Following Smith's lead he defected from FDR in 1936, but supported him in 1940 because he disliked Willkie. In 1944, he supported Dewey, but he backed Truman in 1948 because he liked that Truman ended WWII. He like the rest of Truman's presidency too, and thus supported the Democrats in 1952, but in 1956 he had liked Eisenhower's presidency and thus flipped to supporting him. He liked Eisenhower's second term as well and voted for VP Nixon in 1960. Not wanting to be labeled a racist, he supported Johnson somewhat reluctantly in 1964. But by '68 he was very angry over Vietnam and thus backed Nixon, and then McGovern in 1972. Betrayed by Watergate he supported Carter in 1976. In 1980, he supported Anderson because he disliked Carter but thought Reagan was much too extreme. He didn't like Reagan's first term much but supported him because he considered it his patriotic duty after the assassination attempt. Still, he was so irritated with Reagan's inernationalism during his second term that he supported Dukakis.
