New York has a pretty odd court hierarchy in how they're named. It's almost kind of backwards.

Why are trial courts in California referred to as the "Superior Court" when it's inferior to the district courts of appeal? One of those conventions

It's supreme in the sense that it can serve as a court of original jurisdiction in all cases whatsoever, tho in practice it doesn't hear cases that can be tried by an inferior court. No other court of original jurisdiction is superior to it, and hence it is the supreme level of trial court in New York.
