In 2000, the presidential election in New Mexico was decided by 0.06% -- just 366 votes!

In 2004, Bush flipped it and won by 0.79% -- just under 6,000 votes.

And then in 2008, Obama absolutely destroyed McCain. He won the state by 15.13%... 125,000 votes!

In 2012 Obama won by 10.15% and 80k votes. It wasn't close.

And then in 2016 Clinton won by "only" 8.2% and 65k votes, but keep in mind that a former Governor ran a high-profile third party campaign, and got almost 10% of the vote himself.

Then in 2020 Biden won it by 10.79% and 100k votes.

This state went from nail-biters to practically "Safe D" in a few cycles... so what the hell happened?

Probably a combination of the state's two largest demographics: working class Hispanics and whire suburbanites  becoming more Democrat

Most states west of the Mississippi  saw some fairly strong shifts after 2004. Maybe the memories of the Bush presidency and culture wars of the time period still goes on till today
