Germany has suspended its approval process for the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline which would double its reliance on Russian gas following growing geopolitical pressure to scrap the project.

Energy markets across Europe surged after the German energy regulator suspended its certification process, in a big setback to Kremlin-backed Gazprom’s plans to extend Russian gas dominance via a new pipeline across the Baltic Sea.
Well this is a big letdown on Russian economic expectations.

Amazing! Now the poor working class of Europe gets to pay even more for essentials like heating.

Suck 'em dry Deutschland!

After all, not like people's living standards are more important than scoring a few political points against Putin.

"But Europe should DiVeRsIfY their gas imports." - No, that is not possible. American LNG and all other sources are FAR more expensive, and also much less eco-friendly.

It was a huge mistake to build this pipeline in the first place. However, not using it after construction is finished would be kinda weird.

Erratic policy making like this is pretty much par for the course for Germany, so on the one hand I'm not especially surprised. On the other, I'm not sure if this is not, perhaps, being sensationally reported, given that the delay seems to be have been caused by legal issues (although, of course, legal issues are always a convenient front for controversial things like this).

Eh... Germany "temporarily suspended" it due to legal reasons. Or do you mean that German courts are not independent?

Nord Stream 2: Gas prices soar after setback for Russian pipeline
Quote
The German regulator said "it would only be possible to certify an operator of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline if that operator was organised in a legal form under German law".

The decision is likely to set the project back several months and even when it receives German approval it will require a green light from the European Commission.

The regulator said its approval procedure would remain suspended until "the main assets and human resources" had been transferred from the Swiss-based Nord Stream 2 parent company to its German subsidiary, which owns and operates the German part of the pipeline.

Could be a black mark on Merkel's record, in retrospect?

Yes Ted Cruz is something of a moron, the American Congress pretty much ensured this project would be finished, because their attempt to enforce the Imperial will on one of the Empire’s closest and most important allies domestic issues, ensured that the rest of the USA’s European allies stop pushing against the project. This kind of bullsh**t USA can pull on Latin America, here they tried to pull it on Europe with predictable results.
