Other than being largely white, what makes them Republican?

they view milwaukee as a third world city although they are bucks and brewers fans they find the city to be crime infested. and possibly the jacob blake riots in kenosha (half milwaukee and half chicago) had a huge impact on them

They have been Republican for a long time. What makes them different from other non-Southern majority-white suburbs?

Very German, which means very Catholic or WELS (the most conservative form of American Lutheranism). Also, Milwaukee was one of the last northern cities to see an influx of African Americans during the Second Great Migration. This meant that white flight occurred much later compared to other metros, which means the racial animus is still more present than other suburban areas.

Does it have a particularly large Dutch Reformed population? Catholics are less Republican than Dutch Reformed.

Sort of on the periphery in Sheboygan County, but not much in the cure suburbs.

German Catholics are way more Republican than Catholics as a whole.

Milwaukee is very segregated, even for American standards

Many of the suburbs in Milwaukee County lean Democratic. Has it been that way for a long time, or is that a recent thing?

Also worth noting that the WOW counties are actually fairly exurban. Milwaukee is not a huge city with sprawling suburbs like Chicago, New York, etc.

Compare to other Midwestern metros like Indy, St Louis, etc and they’re all still pretty Republican burbs, though getting a bit less so.

Varies on the suburb. West Milwaukee, West Allis, Shorewood and the south shore suburbs (St. Francis, Cudahy, South Milwaukee) have been for a while. Wauwatosa and the other north sore suburbs are more recently Democratic. Franklin and Oak Park used to be Democratic, but are now pretty Republican, even though it looks as if Oak Park could be slowly shifting back to the Democrats. Greenfield plus even Greendale and Hales Corners appear to be moving leftward. It would not shock me if by 2032 all of the communities in Milwaukee County vote Democratic.

The Wisconsin state legislature members from these areas do not cooperate with the legislature members from Milwaukee especially on abortion, lgbt rights, guns, policing

FTR, I’m German and ELCA Lutheran, and my experience is that such a combination was super common, at least where I grew up in Iowa.

I've heard the popularity of talk radio be given as a reason. As for the stock there and why they make the soup more red, midwestern(miswedstener) Germans (at least in Ohio I know) lead to a huge shift against Democrats between the 20s and the 40s.
