If a white person is singing along to such a song in the first place, they aren't white.

I've probably sung along to "Gold Digger".  It seems stupid to pretend the lyrics don't exist.

By the same token, I also sing along to the radio when they play "I Write Songs, Not Tragedies", even singing the words the radio doesn't play.

Rap & Hip Hop are not music, therefore I'm not sure you can technically call them "songs".

Hell no.  And it's not okay for the n-word to be used by a black person singing a song either.

That ugly word truly belongs swept into the dustbin of history, along with "f****t".

It depends who's around, I guess. If a black person overhears and has a problem with it I can't say that their reaction would be unjustified if it's negative.

If I'm around it will be a problem though, and not for the word itself being sung, it's because people singing out loud to a song is major pet peeve of mine. I don't care how catchy a song is, it pisses me off for some reason. What is the purpose? Keep the singing to the singers.

Probably because it's fun Smiley

It would be so funny to watch you try to scold some black people for saying the n word lol

probably not, but if a white person is playing a song with that word on a stereo or other device, that's practically the same thing already.

I have no problem with any person of any race using the word in any non-derogatory context

I didn't vote because I think it depends on the context.  In general I would say no--a white person should not use the "n-word" whether they're singing or not.  However, I didn't vote no because I think there are important exceptions--most notably historical songs (for example, a song from the 19th century) that use it.  In that situation, I think it's a whitewash of history to not say the word and/or rewrite the song so that it doesn't include the word.

Ironic, given how prohibiting someone from doing something based on skin color is the very definition of racism.

No (...abnormal?? Seriously, Atlas?)

It's not just an abnormal opinion on Atlas. Most people don't understand the no-nuance-allowed attitude that Americans have to this and other slurs. I bet that if you ask a representative sample of the United States if it's okay to say the n-word in a non-insulting context like quoting a song, the vast majority will tell you it's not immoral. The idea that it is immoral to utter a word regardless of context is actually pretty hilarious and even a bit disturbing when you think about it.

The sort of people who put those views forward into the public view tend to be either self-interested media operatives who want clicks and ratings, or ideological fanatics who do not truly understand ordinary Americans. Sometimes both.
