$15 is a start, though it would be better were it over $20 if the federal minimum wage laws since the 1960s had been tied to inflation and productivity. Also, the unnecessary and exploitative distinction between “tipped” and “untipped” workers needs to be abolished.

Ideally though, we’d adopt a system similar to the Nordic model where there is no national minimum wage but labor unions are empowered through powerful legislation and given extreme leverage to determine industry minimums and employers are legally required to uphold collective bargaining agreements. Consequently, though the statutory minimum in Denmark is $0, in practice the normally accepted salary starts at $23/hour.
