Israel has a GDP of 394.7 billion USD. Why are we paying 1 billion USD for any part of their defense system?

And in other parts of their defense system we give them money to buy from American contractors and suppliers, which is still a big waste of money.

No surprise, he’s closer to Ron Paul's ideology in congress than what even Rand Paul currently is.

MTG is extremely pro Israel, no way it was her.

Yes, MTG is your classic "I hate them darn dirty Jews but they have to have their own country so Jesus can come back" Evangelical "non-denominational" antisemite.

Kind of an odd group of no votes, with Bowman, Pocan, and McCollum all voting yes and the less-vocally anti-Israel Grijalva and Newman voting no.

As I said in the other thread, there is no other wealthy country which we are expected to give billions of dollars for no discernable reason. South Korea faces a more potent threat than Israel does and there is never talk that our military support for them should be free. Same with Taiwan. In fact, just the opposite; we've been charging them more for our military support since the Trump Administration. It makes very little sense why Israel is the only country that should expect to get large scale gifts of military aid when the country could easily afford to pay for it themselves.

Why'd AOC switch to Present?

Getting monetary aid from the US and falling under our security umbrella is how foreign lobbying generally works, and the US is the richest nation on Earth.
It's hard to deny that AIPAC has done its job in convincing US lawmakers to give exceptional monetary support to Isreal, and is one of the most effective foreign lobbies in Washington.
John J. Mearsheimer has written a lot on this topic and what he was written is quite illuminating.

Forget the anti-Semitism, imagine being so full of violent hatred that you literally start crying on the floor of the House because you weren’t able to make it easier for terrorists to blow up innocent civilians.  I’ve really tried to give AOC the benefit of the doubt on this stuff, but now it’s pretty clear that with respect to Israel, she really does just want to see as many dead Jews as possible.

A present vote is a pretty dumb move by AOC. It still opens her up to attack for not voting for the Iron Dome while making her look weak and unprincipled especially coupled with the crying.

And it’s not like it’ll win her any votes either

Whether the calculus is worth it is decided by how it compares to a No vote or a Yes vote. It's not as though she has many winning options. Vote no and the new seat she gets could screw her over, vote yes and she loses some of her existing base.
Present may annoy many people and make her look weak, but this is one of the cases in which politicians are best off not taking a stand. I don't think there are many who would flat-out reject her because she voted present, so I actually think it's the least bad choice.

This is how I remember Amash is no longer in the House.
I really am surprised McCollum voted yes.

Well, Thomas Massie voted against the Iron Dome funding, joining progressive Democrats in doing so, as he so often does. Massie's automatic impulse seems to be to vote against everything, regardless of whether or not the majority of his own party supports it.

Tbh if you actually look at her record McCollum is much less anti-Israel than she’s portrayed. She’s a reasonable person who thinks good faith Israel bares more responsibility than it assumes for the conflict - but she’s not an obsessed lunatic who thinks Israel is uniquely bad. Voting for protection for civilians (which is all this is) is consistent with her record. Though I’m surprised at Pocan.

McCollum just has a very intense and deeply personal grudge against AIPAC, I think, which makes her come across worse than she is on this issue.
