Tlaib is a Palestinian. Can we give her a pass on not being supportive of Israel? Please?

Calling Israel an apartheid state is at once incendiary and false. There is no need for her to go there. So I won't give her a pass. I say this as one who has been harshly critical of the Israeli settlements unilaterally placed there on the West Bank, and the excessive US "blank check" to "let" Israel do that, since day one. The problem is that the Palestinian leadership itself has been hopeless. The whole thing is a freaking mess. It is almost as bad as the current state of the US public square!

What is out there to give one a reasonable level of confidence that "that woman" is not an incorrigible Jew hater btw?

Calm down Torie. It's time to take your meds, you old curmudgeon you.

So let’s just run down the list here.

Israel has separate qualifications for citizenship based of ethnic origin, a stateless population created by their ethnically tiered citizenship qualifications that is both physically separated and denied legal rights, periodic campaigns justified by those legal disabilities to remove that population, territories outside of the jurisdiction of their legal system in which to house stateless people under military administration.

But it’s not apartheid because no one speaks Africaans?

And the accusations of anti-semitism are particularly galling given that literally the only people talking about ‘the Jews’ are people trying to defend the Israeli government.

Aside from the theologically based immigration policy (a survival based policy it turns out in that most unpleasant hood alas), what is there that you listed that has something to do with other than Israeli policies on the West Bank, as to which I do take exception? To the extent Israel discriminates against Arabs in Israel itself, that is where you need to go with your apartheid case, to have any traction with me, which understandably might be a very low priority for you. And Tlaib and Omar need to be expelled from Congress, or at the very least have her committee assignments stripped.

Tlaib and Omar are two different people, actually.

Just look at the map of the Palestinian controlled areas in the West Bank. It looks a lot like Bantustans.

Arabs are deprived or given subpar access to Israeli public services and have had increased surveillance listed on them. Furthermore, in rural areas alone they are evicted very easily and prevented from moving in to smaller towns, causing an exodus to urban areas where, in Jerusalem’s case, they get evicted every so often. It is not hyperbole to say they are living under a racist police state.

Rashida Tlaib probably is anti-semetic and horrible in general but the fact that elected officials of the US government identify so strongly with a foreign country is pretty scary as well.

Good points, but I came to a conclusion years ago, that it doesn’t really matter.

Israel may not be the best friend of USA or other Western governments, but it’s a far better friend than the Palestinians will ever be, and siding with the Palestinians will not make Muslims in general and Arabs specific more friendly toward USA, they will hate you no matter what you do.

Leaving aside our personal feelings on either Tliab or Deutch, can we just appreciate that they are probably among the most likely pair to have very antagonistically different stances on something like this? Among House Democrats at least.

Yeah, I mean, Deutch is a Jew and the grandson of Jews. Tlaib is Palestinian. Given that Israel is historically, cultrually and demographically a Jewish nation, and that Palestine and Israel have a very volatile relationship and heated rivalry, it's unsurprising Deutch and Tlaib would both stand strongly on different sides of the issue. I still think Deutch should have avoided calling Tlaib an anti-semite, however, as it is not only an exaggeration and serious allegation, but also because this intraparty squabbling will only enable a GOP that's united on this issue.

He’s right.

And Tlaib and Omar need to be expelled from Congress, or at the very least have her committee assignments stripped.

Of course Mr Partisan Republican will want to go for this.

For what should they be removed from office? For feeling strongly on an issue? Just holding views you don't like? Because someone called one of them an anti-semite (in an exaggeration)? Because they're Muslim? Or is it a combination?

Marjorie Taylor-Greene, who's questioned whether the government was involved in mass shootings, spread lies and conspriacy theories about election fraud that didn't happen, and has advocated executing Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, to name just a few of her crimes, is the one who should be expelled. Yet I've never seen you say, even once, that MTG should leave office.

This is yet another case of partisan bias in your commentary. It should be expected on most things, since this is a political forum, but you don't just get to selectively remove from office politicians you don't like and keep objectively worse ones because you agree with them.

(EDIT: The irony is that you've got me, and many others, on your ignore list, so it's very possible you don't see this post of mine. Must be nice living in an echo chamber where all warranted criticism is locked out.)

That the entire Jewish population being tied as a synonym to a foreign government's actions, and that literally any criticism of that government's actions is deemed anti-Semitism, is itself pretty damn anti-Semitic and downright hypocritical.

Has there ever been a poll done to study how Jews have voted in any of the Squad's elections? If I had to guess, I'd think AOC, and Pressley, as well as Bowman, Bush, and definitely Jayapal win the Jewish vote in their districts handily. Tlaib maybe less so, and for Omar it's probably even closer. But I've never seen any actual numbers to know for sure.

Tlaib, Omar, AOC, Bush, and Pocan have been actively putting American Jews in danger for years now, the same way Greene, Gosar, and Cawthorn have. Deutch has had enough, and I hope he follows up by moving to expel them from their committee.
I entirely agree. Anti-Semitism on any side should be harshly condemned. By left-wingers like Omar making blatant anti-Semitic comments, and right-wingers like MTG and Greene, this is opening the door for more widespread anti-semitism. DSA types turn a blind eye to Omar making anti-Semitic statements, and we need to combat the spread of both anti-semitism and the scourge known as the Democratic Socialists of America.

I imagine that all of them win the Jewish vote for the simple reason that 70%-80% of Jews consistently vote Democratic.

But I would guess none of them won the Jewish vote or even came close in their primaries, which is the only thing that truly matters in these districts.

Calling Israel apartheid might fly in the toxic dump that is dearborn Michigan.

It won’t fly among our already targeted Jewish brethren in south Florida and nyc

Democratic Party deja vu.  The squad is the new Theodore Bilbo.  Unless you think think the opposite, that Deutch is.

Wow, I agree with THG for once.

Anyway, I think Israel does do some (a lot) bad things. Only insane people deny that. There is a humanitarian crisis, mostly of its own making, in the West Bank.

But allowing a terrorist group to bomb civilians is despicable. Israel isn't going to back down from nearly a century of bad blood and just walk away (which won't actually stop the missiles) and Tlaib knows this.

This is a defensive weapon. And Hamas is a terrorist group guilty of such acts like suicide bombing Israeli schools.

Anyway, Ilhan Omar lost her place as the most anti-Semitic member of congress.

Imagine thinking Tlaib and Omar are the "most antisemitic members of Congress" when Josh "Hollywood Marxists" Hawley, MTG and Mary "Hitler did some good things" Miller are still serving.

The usual suspects, the 12 year old blue avatars who get their opinions from their dads, plus Make Palestine Rubble, are here to tell us why the human rights of Palestinians are a dire and grave threat to the future of the Jewish people.

Go f**k yourself, Ted.

Hating the actual Jews is okay. Hating the criminal actions of the Israeli state is the closest thing we have to a modern day pogrom.

Particularly given that this conversation, while it is about Tlaib, has absolutely nothing to do with Omar. Just because you're talking about one doesn't mean you're talking about the other. I mean, wanting Tlaib expelled is probably an overreaction, but at least it makes some sense to say that given the context. I don't see how Omar is in the picture though. And as I already said, I've never seen THG advoacting Republicans get expelled from Congress who are objectively much worse than Tlaib, such as Marjorie Taylor-Greene, only Omar and Tlaib. I agree with you, there is a stench of Islamaphobia in THG's comment.
