I know some say that an appointment to ambassador is a death knell to a political career.

Garcetti strikes me as a dime store Newsom.

Does he have any sort of political future beyond Ambassador to India?

Does he ever make a statewide bid for governor or senate? Maybe a house bid? Does it go anywhere?

Or does he fade into obscurity and become a CNN contributor?

Most likely not going anywhere post ambassadorship appointment. Perhaps a non-gov statewide elected position in a few years after one opens up.

I don't think he has any desire for congress, especially the House.

If he was gonna run for something he'd probably be running for something.

2024 Senate would be my next guess for him, if not that then he's probably just going to fade away

Probably a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors (much like what Hilda Solis did after stepping down as Secretary of Labor).

If Feinstein's retirement coincides with a normal election - so no appointment - then there will be a Democratic clown car and who knows who jumps in. But other then that, it appears that he will not be a factor in national politics in the immediate future.
