It seems there is a wide consensus almost any Democrat would have won 2008 under the circumstances the election was held. If Rev. Al Sharpton, who unsuccessfully ran in 2004, was the Democratic nominee, does John McCain have a chance to get elected?

Sharpton would probably do even better with the African American vote than Obama did, and that allows him to win North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Florida as well flip Georgia and South Carolina.

However, a dramatically decreased percentage of the White Vote allows McCain to hold Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ohio, New Hampshire, and Colorado, and a decreased percentage of the Hispanic vote compared to Obama, allows McCain to flip Nevada and New Mexico.

McCain wins NH but not NJ, which has a lot of Italians and Irish who do not like Sharpton or may remember his rants and rages at police brutality in the 1990s?

New Jersey also has a large African American population in Newark that will vote almost unanimously for Sharpton.

Looks plausible. Poor McCain and having such a poor vote distribution, though...

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) / Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK)
Activist Al Sharpton (D-NY) / Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) ✓

Keep in mind that if he got the nomination, he's doing something right.

Joe Lieberman would have run a third party race to stop Sharpton at all costs.
