Why did Klink do so badly against Santorum in 2000, especially in the Philly burbs? 2000 was a really good election for Senate Dems elsewhere (except VA).

Klink was a socially conservative Dem and was unable to energize the base in the SE. Santorum ran a strong campaign and Klink's poor fundraising abilities hurt him in trying to get his message out. While many would say that a liberal candidate would have helped in the SE (Allyson Schwartz ran but came in second in the primary), I think Santorum would have made up for it in areas out west that went for Klink.
