What sort of voter would be generally supportive of the death penalty but oppose corporal punishment both for their own children as well as more generally (though not necessarily supportive of banning spanking by law) and what kind of voter would have the opposite set of views of opposing capital punishment but supporting corporal punishment not just generally but for their own children?

Pro-DP/anti-corporal punishment voters might be certain kinds of Evangelicals or Mormons who believe in "loving" forms of parenting or otherwise highly educated professional class people who favour capital punishment due to fearing crime. Anti-DP/pro-corporal punishment voters probably include a fair number of black voters who see capital punishment and the justice system as racist and prone to false convictions.

Those sound like good guesses.

Perhaps the former group is someone who was opposed to both the death penalty and corporal punishment, but someone they knew (a friend or family member) was killed by someone, and they support the death penalty being used against that person.

The latter group might be certain religious people who don't believe in the government executing people and are very pro-life (such as the Pope), but think some corporal punishment makes sense to discipline children.

Pro-Death Penalty,anti-Corporal Punishment is probably a “suburban” “law and order” voter. Anti-Death Penalty,pro-Corporal Punishment is probably an urban black voter.
