Longtime New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg died in 2013 after serving in the U.S. from 1982 to 2001, when he initially retired, reluctantly. He came back in 2002 after corrupt Sen. Bob Torricelli was forced to retire, he won a second term in 2008 against moderate Republican Dick Zimmer.

Who would you have supported?

I'd vote Zimmer. Lautenberg was too old. Zimmer would have probably lost in 2014 because of the polarization trends in 2014, but he would be different. No Republican has won a Senate race in New Jersey since 1972, when moderate Republican Clifford Case won.....

NJ Dems should have chosen Frank Pallone in 2002 when Torricelli stepped down...

Write-in: Representative Rush Holt (D)

Lautenberg's too old, and I don't feel comfortable electing a Republican in New Jersey.

I know that Lautenberg died in 2013 and that Chris Christie appointed a Republican to the Senate seat, but that’s better than a Republican serving the entire Senate term.

Bronz, if you want to ask about redoing an NJ senate race which is going to get predictable results from this forum, 2006 is marginally more interesting than 2008.

1976, 1982, 1996 and 2000 are also more interesting.

Definitely Frank Lautenberg. The last time I would have voted for a Republican for Senate in New Jersey probably would have been 1982 or possibly 2000.

Why would you vote for the Republican in 1982 or 2000?

I cannot think of someone who would have been a better Senator than Millicent Fenwick.

I would vote for Fenwick with hindsight considering what bill Lautenberg is the author of, but I doubt MATTROSE94 knows or cares about that bill.

Still Zimmer.

He would not have died in office, and he would have DOA in 2014 regardless of a GOP wave, Booker or Pallone would have beaten him.

Dianne Feinstein shows you what happens when you have senators of old age there too long.....she should retire right now and let Gov. Newsom appoint London Breed to the position.

I agree with the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, which was pushed for by Frank Lautenburg. I strongly disagree with him regarding the Patriot Act and his positions regarding Israel and the Middle East however.

Lautenberg.

Still the best Senator since Clifford Chase.

Zimmer, because I'm generally a Republican, but I must admit I find Lautenberg more sympathetic than Generic Democrat, because with hindsight I know that Lautenberg will end up being the last WW2 veteran in the Senate, and voting against him means voting to end WW2-veteran representation in the Senate a few months sooner.

Still Zimmer, to try to keep the ACA from ever being passed.
