...who went with the major parties in 1996. How did they vote? My impression is that in the Plains/West and wealthy suburbs they went for Dole; in the NE they went for Clinton. Overall? I remember reading that those who stuck with Perot overwhelmingly had Clinton as their second choice.

I think nearly half went to Perot in '96, while just under a quarter went for Dole and the rest went for Clinton. I know Dole tried to win over Perot voters over his opposition to NAFTA and deficit/balanced budget support.
