Round 4:

White vs. Black
minionofmidas vs muon2
oakvale vs NOVA Green
Ebowed vs patzer
bore vs AGA
YPestis25 vs OBD
bore vs TimTurner
Scott vs HockeyDude
Abdullah vs Mimoha
NewYorkExpress vs TimTurner

Am I supposed to be playing two games at once?

The error was mine copying text to Scott. NYE vs Tim is already underway. I acknowledged the error to Scott and he should be posting or reaching out to you and AGA about how to proceed now that a bye is in play from HockeyDude's withdrawal.

Taking another look, it also appears that TimTurner was accidentally listed twice as well. And TimTurner is listed as black - twice, while AGA is also listed as black. If I do not take the bye, I play as black against bore. I know that I cannot play against AGA again because that is against the rules.

I'm very confused. I think I play against bore, but where does that leave TimTurner and AGA?

NYE and TimTurner have already started and that was intended without my error. I pm'ed AGA to say that I had mispasted some text that had bore in two games, and that he could chose to play bore as intended or take a bye and have you play bore (bore gets white either way). Who ever gets the bye is still available in case one of the other games doesn't start due to a withdrawal or a new player jumps in.

AGA has pm'ed me that he'd prefer the bye this round. The pairing becomes bore vs Scott, and bore can issue the challenge as white.

I don't think it was reported, but Mimoha scored a victory almost immediately into round 4 - checkmate in 7 moves.

Just one game per round, but you can play non-tournament games if others are willing.

I gave it my best shot. It was predictably not enough.

( also only just now noticed you wrote sthg in the chat around move 16. Heh.)

It was a tough fight, and you get credit for that. The position got fairly complicated and we both made our share of mistakes. It was only after you played 37 g3 that I felt like I had a clear winning path.

Defeated YPestis in an all-round pretty crazy game. Made a few big blunders but managed to pull through.

Good game!

This was a nice game that I thought could be the second draw of the tournament when I glanced at move 29. This is the position after 29 Qd6+ Ke8.

White played 30. Qd6+ which still could lead to a draw, but white's 31st move allowed the black king to escape.  Here's what I saw where 30. Qb8+ leads to perpetual check.

30. Qb8+ Kd7 31. Qc7+ Ke8 32. Qb8+ and it's back to the position on 30.

30. Qb8+ Ke7 31. Bg5+ f6 32. Qc7+ Ke8 and the king can't get off the back two rows.

30. Qb8+ Ke7 31. Bg5+ Kd7 32. Qb7+ Kd6 33. Qb8+ Kc6 34. Qc8+ Kb6 35. Bd8+ Ka7 36. Qc7+ Ka6 37. Qc6+ Ka7 and the king can't get off the a-file.

Then there's this option:
30. Qb8+ Ke7 31. Bg5+ Kd7 32. Qb7+ Kd6 33. Qb8+ Kc5?? 34. Qc7+ Kb4 35. Be7+ Ka4 36. b3# and the white pawn delivers checkmate!

Resigned against bore. One fatal move made checkmade inevitable. Sad

It was a good game until that blunder. The knight sac on move 20 was very good. Credit to bore for staying in the game despite being substantially behind.

patzer defeated Ebowed a few days ago as well.

The only game left in round 4 is oakvale vs NOVA Green.

Since the game has had as many as 20 players the 5th round should be the final round.

Now that the tournament has entered its fifth month, it might be worthwhile to consider if this is the way we want to do these things going forward. We had a lot of drop-outs, and it's hard to keep people engaged for this long.

If people are willing to play more than one game at once, another option is pool play. Players are grouped in pools of 3-5 players and play games within their pool all at once. The winners (or top two) in each pool go into a finals pool.

I'm willing to do pool play, if others see it as a good step to take as well.

A totally undeserved victory for me, commiserations Scott, I think games like that have happened to all of us.

I'm in this until the bitter end (or at least until I'm literally unable to post here).

I'm concerned about how slow this tournament is going.

There's only one game left in the round. All other games were done by Jan 4. The round can go no faster than the slowest game. The tournament uses a 3-day/move time limit, and some players are more likely to use their full time limit.

Our remaining holdout game needs to hurry things along.

FYI, next year, we should probably set the time limit at one day per move.
