To all the Australians on this forum, what if Prime Minister Harold Holt didn't drown while swimming in Portsea on December 17,1967 and ran for the Prime Ministership in 1969 against anti-war Labor Leader Gough Whitlam. Discuss.

By 69 Vietnam was becoming more unpopular-but not enough by itself to cause a Whitlam victory. Presuming a boring campaign, Holt would've won narrowly thanks to winning swi(mmi)ng seats.

I agree, Holt, McEwen, Gorton wouldn't matter. The Libs still had the public support overall. McMahon was an AWFUL PM (great treasurer)... but literally anyone could have beaten him. But the "It's Time" campaign was one of the best political campaigns EVER... right up there w/ Morning in America for Reagan.

I believe that it was a breath of fresh air when Gough defeated (undoubtly one of the worst Australian PM's of all time) William McMahon in December 1972. Shame Gough had to go so soon.

Holt vs. Whitlam in 1972 *would* be quite a different matter to '69. I'd actually give Whitlam a bigger win over Holt; the Vietnam stain on him would be large and smelly. That said, there were other issues.

Also, I love the 'it's time' campaign too.
