What is the worst performance by a sitting Lieutenant Governor in a Governor's race?

For the primary - I have to assume it's Justin Fairfax's 3.56% earlier this year. I know this was expected, but it's still crazy to think about.

For the general, I'm not sure. Incumbent LG Jari Askins lost by nearly 21 percentage points in OK-Gov 2010. I'm sure there are worse ones out there, though.

Not something I have immediate data on, but yeah, Fairfax has to be a contender here (unlike in any other race he could try to run in).

Outside of write-in campaigns, it’s hard to imagine an LG doing worse than 3%.

I have yet to find any comprehensive lists of unsuccessful gubernatorial runs by sitting Lt. Governors.

However, within the last 5 years the worst performance is almost certainly Mike Cooney losing by 13% last year.

Kim Guadagno lost by about the same margin in NJ in 2017.

Kerry Healey lost by 20 points to Deval Patrick as the incumbent Lieutenant Governor in 2006, not quite as high of a margin as OK-2010 but pretty close.

Idaho's Lt. Gov. Janice McGeachin is trying to primary Gov. Little from the right. While I don't think she'll win, it will be interesting to see the final margin, especially since Ammon Bundy is also on the ballot. I would guess a 9-10 point loss?

Any relation to Maura?

Does not seems so. Kerry was a Republican (the LG of Mitt Romney).

Oh right, thanks. I assumed it was a primary for some reason.

Cruz Bustamente's 31% of the vote in the 2003 recall were rather embarrassing for a sitting lieutenant governor of a - even then - blue-leaning state and without another major Democratic candidate in the field.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned David Zuckerman in 2020

Donna Lynne (LG of Colorado) only got 7% and finished 4th in 2018. Though she was a bureaucrat who’d never been elected to anything before as far as I know. I doubt you’d find anyone lower than Fairfax, even LG’s of unpopular governors (Say Todd Lamb in 2018) tend to get 15-20% just due to name recognition.

That is still bizarre to me, I’ve no idea why he was so unpopular.

He and Wolf had a very icy relationship. The two had a huge public falling out over Stack's mistreatment of his staff back in 2017 which led to the Governor launching an investigation into the misconduct and even stripping him and his wife of State Police protection.
