I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill.

She wants to be Senator

It could be a while before a seat opens up. She could try to be Governor first. However, Governor of New Jersey has not proven to be a useful stepping stone, a Governor has not gone to the Senate since A. Harry Moore, and that was a different era.

I was under the impression that Menendez will retire or will be forced out by the NJ Dem bigwigs in 2024. Then again I could be wrong but I've heard this a few times after how underwhelming he was in 2018.

If he does leave in 2024 than Sherill's the obvious candidate. If any of the current House members want to be Governor it's probably Gottheimer, though he want make the Senate seat too.

I think Menendez says he's going to seek reelection in 2024. I wish he wouldn't but if he wasn't going to be forced out in 2018, he's probably not going to be forced out in 2024.

If the Republicans regain the Senate in 2022 or 2024, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Booker got in in 2025.  Governor is a better gig than Senator, especially serving in the minority.

Rs aren't Fav to win the Senate it will be 52 or 52 Senators after 22 and Tester or Brown can win in 24

Chances the NJ Dems switch elections to be held in presidential years?

I am pretty sure this would require an amendment to our constitution.

Well amend away! Don't we have supermajorities?

EDIT: I guess it would take too long to organize and put it on the ballot. We have the numbers though but not for long since I think GOP won enough to break Dems supermajority.

I'm not really sure why Murphy would agree to this and cut his governorship a year short lol

He could always just get language into the amendment to grandfather himself into a third term.

At this point she should focus on getting re-elected.

Oh for now, definitely. I'm assuming her seat will become more Democratic with redistricting, but in New Jersey, you never know!

On the Republican side, Ciattarelli obviously can and should run again. After this result, he and Hugin will continue to control the state party for the foreseeable future.

Sweeney will do well in South Jersey, but can he do well in Middlesex, etc?

He will?

I think he'd be a pretty weak candidate overall.

I could see Sweeney winning if only for the fact that the Dem gubernatorial bench seems fairly thin. 2017 seemed like a slam dunk for any Democrat who would get in but it attracted quite the lackluster field. I guess Sweeney’s biggest roadblock would be Sheila Oliver, but otherwise Sweeney could potentially skate by on strong union backing in South Jersey in an otherwise divided primary.

Not sure what's funny; Sweeney is the leading contender for the nomination, especially since Fulop has already declined, and the fact that he's announcing so early emphasizes that. Have to assume these replies have no idea how NJ politics work.

I would also give Baraka, Oliver, and Scutari a decent shot.

Do you think Ras Baraka can play well in the suburbs?

No.

If Baraka can't, why could Booker? Booker won Morris in 2020.

I think if Biden wins re-election in 2024, Booker will jump in the 2025 gov race and set himself up for a pres run in 2032.

I also think Steven Fulop and Sheila Oliver could run too.

Fulop is probably not running. I can see Assemblyman Raj Muhkerji, a young rising star, running as well. He is South Asian, he is wickedly smart and attractive, handsome, he could do well. However, I see him more as a running mate to Sweeney as geographical balance.

South Jersey has not had their own governor since Florio. South Jersey needs representation as well.

Booker is from the suburbs, connected to the banking and pharmaceuticals industries, and isn’t the son of Amiri Baraka.

https://newjerseyglobe.com/campaigns/norcross-registered-to-vote-in-florida-in-2020-will-step-down-as-democratic-national-committeeman/

In a funny tidbit, South Jersey Democratic power broker George Norcross, the brother of Camden Congressman Donald Norcross, has actually been a registered voter in Florida since July 2020.
