Mitchell is leading 5:3 among independents and still way behind. What a freakishly Republican district.

Weirdy they call it a 'strongly Republican District' though Kerry still got 45% of the vote here.  If Mitchell can't win with 5:3 margins amongst Independents then its not possible for him to win at all.

Redistricting had alot to do with it, the Governor was a Dem when the last census, so more conserv independents were brought in, they vote one way presidentially and another way congressionally.

The governor was a Republican, and it doesn't matter anyway because redistricting in Arizona is done by a non-partisan commission.

Nonpartisan commissioners are appointed by the officeholders in AZ aren't they. And there was a Dem state senate. They are recommended and appointed, they are simply not nonpartisan.
