Goldwater, as even though I strongly disagreed with him on the issues, particularly civil rights (he didn't oppose the 1964 Civil Rights act out of racism by the way, as wrong as he was to oppose it), he was a man of principle, so much so that said principles caused him to grow disillusioned with his very own Republican party.

90s-era Goldwater because he came out and had the courage to stand up for gays being allowed to proudly fight in the military.  FF.

Kemp, because he was one of the only Republicans who broke with the vast majority of his party in terms of not writing off urban areas as being unworthy sh**holes to rail against as a foil, but a constituency with specific needs to advocate policy solutions towards.
