I think Harris's much wider name recognition would help her beat Warren in such a contest.

I think Harris's much wider name recognition would help her beat Warren in such a contest.

Gallup's last poll of Warren's favorability in the 2020 primary campaign (taken in Jan. 2020) showed 89% of respondents having an opinion of her:

That's the same as the percentage of people having an opinion of Harris in January of this year.  They both have near-universal name recognition amongst people who actually vote in primaries.  And that would be even more true in 2024 after a hypothetical primary campaign in which they're the only two major candidates running for the nomination.

Harris would obviously win overall.

However, who would win the Oklahoma and West Virginia primaries?

My guess is Warren, since Harris would be seen as the “standard” candidate while Warren would be the more “protest” candidate even if she isn’t really a good fit for these states. Also, Warren was at least born in Oklahoma and would probably do better in the college towns.

Can anyone design an Oklahoma or West Virginia county map for this matchup?

Harris had to drop out last time because Gabbard of all people slapped her across the room during the debate. Warren would win this horrible matchup.

You know that the incumbent president also didn't do well back in 2008 when he was running before being vice president?
But Biden was not looked upon as a high-tier nor a frontrunner candidate like Harris was, and he was running in the same field as Clinton and Obama. It's only his status as being VP is what landed him as the nominee. Even then he barely won the nominee, with Warren splitting the progressive vote.

Warren didn't really split the progressive vote. Her supporters divided equally between Biden and Sanders after she dropped out.

Perhaps something like Harris winning Oklahoma County and Tulsa but losing everywhere else?

It's only in hindsight that we look upon Obama as some unbeatable juggernaut. The reality is that in late '07/early '08, up to Super Tuesday, he really didn't have great name recognition.
