This was already a race to watch, wouldn't be surprised to see Rainville pull it off

I haven't been paying attention, but since when was this race competitive?  Or is ARG just getting weird Vermont numbers?

How is the election of a socialist a lock wheras an average Democrat is neck and neck with his GOP opponent?

Vermont is weird.

Rainville seems to be a good example of a New England Republican, based on her website, she seems to have somewhat liberal views on most topics except the war in Iraq. This race could be decided on Personality, rather than party politics, which is probably why it's so close.

They are weird!

I believe Leahy is the only Democratic Senator elected from Vermont...ever.

They haven't elected a Democratic representative in 150 years.

Oddly enough no... they elected one in 1958 (I think it was '58) but he didn't get re-elected.

Fun Fact about Vermont: Vermont was one of only two states that didn't give its electoral votes to President Frankilin D. Roosevelt in 1936 (D-NY). That year was the first time he ran for re-election and he was unbelieveably popular almost everywhere. Vermont still chose to vote for Republican candidate Alfred M. Landon. (The other state was Maine.)

Well, wasn't 1958 the 1994 of its era? Wink

If it's the same sample as the senate poll, I say they over-sampled Repulicans in some way.

People forget that Vermont used to be one of the most Republican states in the country. I remember in 1912 Taft only carried Vermont and Utah.

Welch is just not as strong as candidate as Rainville. This one will only go Democratic because of the national conditions.

It's true that Vermont used to be one of the most Republican states, but it has always been a very liberal state, and many Republicans there are now RINOs.

It was liberal on social issues. It wasn't liberal on economic issues until fairly recently.
