Does anybody know why Douglas is so popular in Vermont?

I think Vermonters see him as a centrist, and keep him in office simply because they don't want one-party rule.

Make no mistake, they hate the national Republican Party and everything it stands for (see how Bush's vote collapsed from 2000 to 2004). They simply don't think Douglas is as repulsive as most of his co-partisans.
