South Dakota may have a larger area that could fit into another region, but the Midwestern part of SD is really Midwestern.

I'd say Ohio because it doesn't really have a regional definition other than "Midwestern" that could apply to the whole state. There's Appalachian which could apply to the Southeastern mountainous part of the state, and Rust Belt or Great Lakes which applies to the Northern part of the state. That's unlike South Dakota, all of which is considered a part of the "Great Plains".

South Dakota

The most prototypical "Midwestern" state I can imagine is either Iowa or Nebraska, and SD borders both so I figure it can't be that different

Ohio is certainly Midwestern but has more mixed influences from the Appalachians, Great Lakes and Tennessee Valley

Ohio, of course! It's one of the core Midwestern states.

Obviously Ohio.

Many consider the 'Midwest' to include parts of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas; however, the Dakotas are in their own subregion (the Dakotas / the Badlands), while Nebraska and Kansas comprise the Great Plains.

The Midwest encompasses the westernmost parts of Pennsylvania; Ohio; Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Wisconsin; Minnesota; and Michigan - otherwise referred to as the 'Rust Belt.'

Ohio by virtue of its inclusion in Big Ten Country, though both are clearly part of the Midwest at a state level.

Yeah, the Midwest starts at Rochester NY, (a case can even be made for Syracuse, NY), and where the hills taper off in Western PA, and goes west to the point where wheat is more commonly grown than corn. Anything that is relatively arid is the West, unless it is the Northwest.

Rochester and Pittsburgh are geographically Northeast. Culturally is another story.
