Quote
Official Language of the South Act

Section I. Title
i. This bill may be known as the “Official Language of the South Act”

Section II. Substance
i. English shall be the official language of the Southern Region
ii. Nothing in this act shall be construed to infringe upon the right of sub-regional jurisdictions to adopt additional official languages beyond English

It is possible that the South already has an official language, but in case we do not, I propose passing this bill. I'm not entirely sure if this is the sort of thing that should be put up to a referendum, so I am open to an amendment allowing for such if the chamber deems it appropriate.

Minimum 48 hours debate

Is there really a necessity to having an official language in a South? This is a solution in search of a problem.

I agree that it should be put up to a referendum

I'd vote against it because, frankly, it seems quite unnecessary but if that's what Southerners want then they should have it

I oppose merely putting this before the public as a referendum. This is pointless. We don't need something like this cluttering our regional constitution. We don't need this as a statute either.
Some things just don't make worthy referendum material even if one buys into the idea that direct democracy is good in general.

I think this bill can be fleshed out. We could declare English to be the official language but add a clause that would still ensure that accommodations can be provided to people who need to receive information in a foreign language such as the many Spanish speaking Southerners in states like Texas and Florida. If the desire is there for this to be settled in a referendum, then I suggest holding off on a final vote until this bill is passed and vote accordingly.

Let's have it be tabled until August then when the new chamber-people can vote how they like.

Okay, but I'd be voting no.

Unsure if you'd all prefer that to a referendum.

This bill has enough votes to be defeated, delegates have 24 hours to change their vote.
