Then conquer we must
When our cause it is just
And this be our motto
In God is our trust

Despite having several different versions of stanzas after the first, if we do change, I favor this three stanza version of America the Beautiful.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Hail Columbia, happy land!
Hail, ye heroes, heav’n-born band,
Who fought and bled in freedom’s cause,
Who fought and bled in freedom’s cause,
And when the storm of war was gone
Enjoy’d the peace your valor won.
Let independence be our boast,
Ever mindful what it cost;
Ever grateful for the prize,
Let its altar reach the skies.

Who suggested Stand by Me? At any rate, the current national anthem is perfect.

No, definitely not.  However, I wouldn't complain if we found more reasons to play The Battle Hymn of the Republic ... epic song.

I have long favored a move towards "Battle Hymn of the Republic" so every man, woman, and child can be constantly reminded of God and Sherman crushing the rebels in the name of Union and Liberty, Forever.

Mine eyes have seen the poster who's named like a Spanish bank,
He is searching out the posts for whom BRTD's to thank,
We will flush Trump's ideology into a septic tank,
All liberal, all the time!

Glory, glory, Hallelujah!
Glory, glory, Hallelujah!
Glory, glory, Hallelujah!
All liberal, all the time!

I'm in the same boat. The Star Spangled Banner is perfectly fine. But if the national anthem was changed, The Battle Hymn of the Republic is the best replacement. It makes you think of what America is supposed to be: a nation with liberty and justice for all, a nation based on freedom on a moral crusade against the forces of tyranny, a nation that is an example for others to follow, the 'shining city on hill'.

While we're on the topic of national anthems: Russia should change its national anthem to Farewell Slavianka. What an absolute banger.

The Soviet anthem and Putinized version suck beyond the first bombastic note. I'm not even going to mention the Yeltsin era anthem.

America is a meme created by the 18th-century version of the alt-right.

No, although I would be in favor of swapping the Civil War verse for the third verse (not that anything past the first verse is ever sung anyway)

Idk. This would be a pretty weird national anthem for the US

But (at the risk of sounding like BRTD) it would be better than the Star Spangled Banner, at least.

I really don't get what people don't like about The Star-Spangled Banner. It's a perfectly good anthem.

It's a drinking song for British gentry.

The National Anthem is fine as it is. I could listen to it the whole day.

Well damn, even the Brits sometimes get things right. It's a good melody.

And the lyrics make up for it by being based on the last war y'all fought with Britain, and they're fairly poignant in terms of showing resilience in the fact of adversity. I think it's an underrated anthem, honestly.

A lot of our best national songs are parodies of old British songs. "Our Country Tis of Thee" is a parody of "God Save the King", which hits it home with its last line "Great God our King." And the "land of the noble free" line gives me the chills every time.

In the case of Yankee Doodle, we didn't even really bother with changing the lyrics. We just flung it right back at 'em.

On a side note, it's too bad that the one line in the third stanza of our Anthem is so out of step with today's political environment, because I wish singing all four verses would become the norm. When we just sing the first stanza, we answer a question that the second stanza answers - but we don't sing.

"This Land is Your Land" would be best, IMO.
