A nazi invasion would be very hard.
But the germans could have conducted an air raid on the Atlantic Coast of the USA if Salazar gave an authorization to Hitler to use Azores as an air base.
German aircraft didn't have enough autonomy (concerning the fuel) to take off from France, reach the USA, throw the bombs and go back.
But if Germany had aircrafts which had autonomy of 8,000 km, they could take off from Azores, throw the bombs in the east of the USA and go back. The distance between Azores and the Atlantic Coast is 4,000 km.

Even if they had this possibility, Germany could not win the war. And Salazar would not like to join the Axis, since the Axis would loose the war, and he could have been removed from his office by the Allies after the war.

And I suppose while Germany builds an airbase on the Azores and flies bombing missions from it the Royal Navy and USN are sitting around with their dicks in their hands?

Salazar handed the islands over to the Allies because they would have invaded and seized the Azores anyway if he didn't. Doubly so if Portugal is stupid enough to be actually aligning with Germany in this scenario.

I suppose the Kriegsmarine could have developed a fleet of submarine aircraft carriers much as the Imperial Japanese Navy did. Not they could have been militarily significant since such "carriers" only included a couple of scout aircraft intended mainly for scouting. the Japanese even "bombed" the Pacific Coast once, dropping some incendiaries in Oregon in order to start a forest fire.

Other than a few high value targets such as refineries, such Nazi raids would have been largely been militarily insignificant.
